Elwynn (b. 4E 181) was a Breton Mage hailing from High Rock. He was the prophesised Last Dragonborn, the first in centuries, and was also the Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold, in addition to being Thane of numerous holds. The greatest of the heroes in the Fourth Era, he is primarily known for defeating the divine dragon Alduin, the World-Eater, and preventing the destruction of the world. He is also known for defeating the First Dragonborn, the Dragon Priest Miraak, and removing his influence both from the island of Solstheim and from Tamriel.

Background[]

Nearly all of what we know about the Last Dragonborn comes from the biography which was written in the last years of his life, by his son Edwyn. The biography was originally composed of six volumes, of which only two survive; however, these, covering the crucial 'years of adventuring', during which he learnt of his Dragonborn heritage, became Arch-Mage, and defeated both Alduin and Miraak, are of immense interest to historians, mages and philosophers, and all who have an interest in this legendary figure. This text is the first attempt to transcribe the biography from the tablets on which it was first written onto modern parchment, a task made more difficult by the slight linguistic differences between their dialect and ours today.

The books transcribed below are believed to be books two and three of the original six. Book one would have covered the background to the Dragonborn myths and some of the history of Skyrim, in addition to an in-depth discussion of the Dragonborn's early life (what we have below on the subject is taken from a brief summary at the start of book two). Books four and five would have described the Dragonborn's career as Arch-Mage of the College, including his involvement in the Skyrim Civil War, the Second Great War, and the Atmoran Revolt, while book six would describe his legacy; sadly, these last three are now lost, in addition to the first. The fragments that survive, mostly quoted in other accounts, are told of after the end of book three.

What we do have, however, are these two books, which provide an astoundingly complete picture of three years of the Dragonborn's life. The detail and intricacy is such that most historians believe them to be based on personal diaries of the events as they unfolded: many point to Brelyna Maryon, who was known to keep detailed journals of experiments and diplomacy in her later years, as a source of information. It is almost certain that the Dragonborn himself contributed substantially to the work, the author being his own son, and perhaps we can see his own personality coming through, especially in the earlier chapters, which deal less with grand affairs and adventures and more with day-to-day life.

Other possible sources include diaries and biographies on many of the key players in the Dragonborn's early career, and oral testimony too - the tales passed down by the Skaal on Solstheim sometimes echo, almost uncannily, phrases and details from this account. Probable sources include: Eydis' account of High King Ulfric's experience with magic, Irileth's biography of Jarl Balgruuf 'the Wise', and the Blades' account of the Dragon Crisis, all of which are now lost to us. However, these wonderfully complete accounts of the Dragonborn's early wanderings in Skyrim more than make up for their loss.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Elwynn is an orphan hailing from a town in High Rock known as Wayrest. His step-parents found him in a wooden crib within the forest next to their cottage. They decided to keep the fact that they weren't blood relations a secret. He lived on the outskirts of Wayrest helping his stepmother, stepfather and stepbrother with the family fishing business, selling their catches to the local market. Elwynn's family were not well off but they had enough to get by on, being relatively happy with their location and fishing trade. Although being a Breton family, Elwynn's family never really possessed any magical abilities, only being able to cast simple utility spells that helped them around the house and with the fishing business effectively.

At the age of 13, Elwynn began to experiment with his magical roots, mimicking his step-parents and casting new spells from destruction spells to illusion spells.

At the age of 18, Elwynn's parents finally came out and told Elwynn that he was adopted. They told the story of how they found him in the forest and that he isn't actually blood related. This angered Elwynn and he started to resent his parents due to them not telling him earlier and not letting him further his magical abilities by visiting the Arcane University and the Cyrodiil Mages' Guilds. After mulling it over for about a year, Elwynn finally decided to move out and further his magical abilities on his own by moving out and taking up residence in an abandoned cottage on the edge of High Rock and learning it from Spell Tomes and books.

For a long time, Elywnn slightly resented his family for not telling him the truth, feeling that if they had, he could still be with them now.

Imprisonment by the Legion[]

A few months after moving into the abandoned cottage, Elwynn made his weekly trip to Skyrim to trade for his alchemical resources, materials and other items. He came across a band of men (Stormcloaks) who weren't doing anything interesting until they were accosted and ambushed by the Imperial Legion. Elwynn was knocked out early in the skirmish due to being off-guard.

When he awoke, he was and in a cart with three other people: Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak, the Stormcloak soldier Ralof of Riverwood, and the horse thief Lokir of Rorikstead. When they arrived at Helgen to be executed, the panicking Lokir made a run for it and was shot down. Elwynn was not on the execution list, but was ordered to the block with the rest of them, an Imperial soldier named Hadvar assuring that his body would be returned to High Rock.

Dragon on the Watchtower

The dragon on the watchtower

After one Stormcloak got executed, Elwynn was called to the block. Luckily, before he could be beheaded, a dragon landed on a nearby watchtower and started attacking, throwing the entire town into chaos. In the confusion, Elwynn and Ralof fled into a nearby tower. Fighting their way through attacking Imperials, who where oblivious to the attack above, the pair escaped through the basement and into an underground cavern, which lead to the outside. The dragon was gone by the time they got out. Ralof and Elwynn split up, but both made their way to the nearby town of Riverwood. Along the way, Elwynn found the Guardian Stones along the road, receiving a blessing by the Mage to improve his magical training.

The First Adventure[]

After spending the night in Riverwood's tavern, Elwynn learned about several rumours and dabbled with the nearby alchemy table. He also found himself tangled with in a local love triangle over Camilla, sister of the local shopkeeper, resulting the bard Sven coming victorious. While looking for work that didn't neccessarily require "getting his hands dirty", he agreed to find the shopkeeper's antique Golden Claw, which was stolen by bandits up at Bleak Falls Barrow. After learning some new spells and accepting some hospitality from Rolaf's family, he set off to the barrow the long way around, having failed to listen to Camilla's directions. As such, he fought his way through a heavy snowstorm, a few skeletons, and a bandit camp just within Bleak Falls Barrow, where he spent the night after dispatching of his attackers.

He continued through the barrow and encountered numerous dangers, ranging from a trap-loaded door puzzle (which a hapless bandit demonstrated) to a massive spider to undead Draugr stirring from their rest. Recovering the Golden Claw from Arvel the Swift, Elwynn continued further into the barrow and used the claw to unlock the final chamber. There he found a mysterious wall with unfamiliar writing, one of the unknown words burning into the Breton's memory. Immediately afterwards, one last Draugr rose from its coffin and attacked, only to fall prey to Elwynn's improving magic. He then recovered a curious Dragonstone from its body and left the barrow through a secret passageway at the back.

It was a miserable journey back to Riverwood, a torrential rainstorm made worse by a scavenger assaulting the mage after stripping clean a fallen Stormcloak. Elwynn endured, however, and after stopping at an old lady's cabin to read a book, he made it back to the village. Sleeping the rest of the night with Ralof's family, he returned the Golden Claw in the morning, receiving a nice reward and seemingly Camilla's eye.

After receiving his reward money and selling the loot from his journey, Elwynn wanted to buy some magical items. He had enough for a Ring of Destruction, but not enough for the robes he wanted. To earn some extra money, he spent several hours chopping wood at the mill. Although he made a nice profit, the Breton wasn't too big on the whole "physical labour" thing and instead turned to alchemical pursuits for a time.

He didn't wish to wait around in Riverwood forever, however, and planned for the journey ahead. He intended to visit Whiterun before hunting down a bounty, but he stumbled across a nearby mine that diverted his attention. After clearing it of bandits, he returned to Riverwood to sell his loot and sleep. In the morning, he set out for Whiterun. Along the way however, he got sidetracked by the nearby Honningbrew Meadery where he took some of their mead out of barrels and then sold it back to them.

He then visited the nearby farms where he looked around and harvested some crops. While at the farms, he also met some members of the companions who had just slain a giant, but the conversation got off to strange start, and he refused to join them as he thought they were hinting he should. After he fully explored the farms, he entered the city of Whiterun.

Eventful Times in Whiterun[]

After mistaking a local hunting shop for the local inn, Elwynn found the real inn and spent the night there. Once morning came, he decided to explore the city, starting with the inn itself. Unfortunately, his efforts to read a book in a back room was mistaken for a forgery attempt, resulting in a five septim fine and trip to Dragonsreach, the local castle. Shaking off the unpleasent experience, the Breton wandered about and did some shopping, eventually noticing an argument between the Battle-Born clan and an elderly Gray-Mane, taunting her about the apparent death of Thorald, her son. Taking offense to the Battleborns' actions, he agreed to search the Battle-Born's residence for proof that Thorald was only missing. Sure enough, he learned that the Thalmor had the man captive, but given how far away he was being held, he decided that rescuing the man was not his first priority.

Returning to Dragonsreach, Elwynn met with Jarl Balgruuf the Greater, informing him of Riverwood's desire for aid. The Jarl then introduced him to Farengar Secret-Fire, the court mage, who wanted Elwynn to recover an artifact from Bleak Falls Barrow. It was the Dragonstone, which Elwynn had already recovered. As soon as he handed it over, the Jarl's housecarl alerted the pair that a dragon had been sighted. The Jarl, after thanking Elwynn for his help and granting him permission to buy property, asked the Breton to accompany the soldiers investigating the dragon, as he was the only one with any experience regarding them.

Elwynn wasn't exactly enthused with this appointment; after all, his only experience was of fleeing a dragon, not fighting one. Regardless, he joined the band of soldiers sent to investigate, as they weren't expecting to actually fight it. The dragon did show up, however, and fight they did. Elwynn delivered the final blow with his lightning powers, and as the dragon died, his body reduced to bone and magical energy poured into the Breton. Recalling the word he had seen at Bleak Falls Barrow, he shouted it and a forceful blast expelled from his mouth. The soldiers around him exclaimed their belief that he was a Dragonborn for absorbing the dragons power. While he had read a book on the Dragonborn, he didn't recall the details and was overwhelmed by the experience, deciding to return to Whiterun and soak everything in.

He did not have much time to himself in the aftermath. While returning to Whiterun, he heard a thunderous shout of "DOVAHKIIN" that shook the very ground. Frightened and feeling unsafe, he hurried back to the city, where he saw two Alik'r Redguards arguing with a soldier. They asked him to seek out a Redguard woman in the city for them, as they were forbidden to enter. Asking mindlessly about this at the inn, he discovered that it was the innkeeper's assistant, Saadia, who proceeded to threaten his life and explain the situation. She claimed to be a member of Hammerfell nobility and that the men searching for her were mercenaries hired by the Thalmor, hoping that Elwynn would take care of them for her. However, Elwynn had enough to take in already and went straight to bed, pondering upon the strange events of that day.

The next day, Elwynn promptly travelled back to Dragonsreach and informed the Jarl of the dragon's death. In the process, he learned that what he had heard the night before was the Greybeards summoning him, high atop the Throat of the World at High Hrothgar. In addition, for defeating the dragon that threatened the hold, he was named Thane of Whiterun, a hero of the hold. As part of his position, he was assigned a woman named Lydia as his personal housecarl. Elwynn needed to sit down for a moment to process everything and plan ahead.

Of Septims and Spells[]

Elwynn decided that before he was to travel anywhere far away, such as High Hrothgar, that he wanted to purchase all the spells he wanted from Farengar Secret-Fire. Calculating the cost to accomplish this, he concluded that he needed some four thousand or so septims to accomplish this. As such, he decided to stay in Whiterun Hold and perform miscellaneous tasks, like delivering frost salts and retrieving the lost amulet of a Priest of Arkay. He also agreed to find a sword called 'Nettlebane' for the Temple of Kynareth; when inquiring about the Gildergreen tree, he had absentmindedly stolen some lavender, and while he returned the plant and paid a one septim fine, he still felt bad enough to seek the blade as penance for his action.

He also followed up on previous activities. Having heard an earlier argument, he learned of a stolen sword that he could retrieve for a reward. He also followed up on the events from the previous night, interrogating an Alik'r prisoner on the whereabouts of his leader, Kematu. The Redguard agreed to tell him if Elwynn paid his fine and released him. Reluctantly doing so, hoping that the ultimate reward would cover his cost, he obtained the information he needed. To both his amusement and chagrin, the guards did not appear to actually release the criminal; amusement for the man getting his just desserts, but chagrin because it felt like wasted money.

After spending another night at the inn, Elwynn set off into the hold proper. While he spent much of his time gathering alchemical ingrediants, he witnessed a skirmish between a Whiterun soldier and two necromancers (the soldier winning) and his first glimpse of some mammoths. He considered approaching the mammoths, but given their aggressive stance and a nearby giant, he backed off. As it was along the way to Kematu's hideout, Swindler's Den, Elwynn ran across Redoran's Retreat, the site of the bounty he picked up from Riverwood. Upon clearing the cavern, the young mage found a treasure map leading somewhere near Whiterun. Seeking it out and finding a small yet profitable haul, Elwynn returned to the city to sell his loot and call it a night.

After a frustrating morning of poor magical practice, he turned in the bounty and left to once again seek out Swindler's Den. Deciding to investigate Fort Greymoor along the way, Elwynn was confused by the relocation of the dragon bones from before. To his terror, he saw another dragon in the distance, prompting him to retreat into the nearby guard tower. However, said dragon flew away into the mountains, much to Elwynn's relief. Fort Greymoor was inhabited by so many bandits (plus one creepy old lady) that both he and Lydia couldn't carry all the loot. After giving brief consideration to buying a house, simply to have somewhere to stash his hefty book collection (heavily increased after his latest outing), he returned to Whiterun to the usual routine.

Clearing out much of his inventory and instituting a new policy about food, carrying no more than ten of each foodstuff, he and Lydia set off again. Carefully sneaking past a giant camp, fearing that the large creatures would be hostile, he made his way to some Nordic ruins. After a nosey-poke at Dustman's Cairn and a full purge of the undead-filled Hamvir's Rest, they killed the Saber Cat that slew a hunter's camp at Greenspring Hollow.

At long last, they finally reached Swindler's Den and delved inside. Slaying some bandits that apparently housed the Alik'r, Elwynn reached an impasse: he had to trudge through water. However, he stripped down, carrying his clothes instead of wearing them, he forged onward. On the far side, Kematu and his men were waiting for him. Not wishing for bloodshed, they spoke to Elwynn before he left the water. They claimed that Saadia was actually a traitor to Hammerfell who sold a city out to the Thalmor, and that they had come to retrieve her so justice might be done. Elwynn was leery about this proposition, but the implications of treason, their superior numbers, and his current nudity swayed him to their side. He agreed to lure her out of the city, but asserted that he would turn on them if they broke their word and attempted to kill her.

With reluctance, Elwynn lied to Saadia and lured her out to the stables. Kematu lived up to his promise, zapping her with a paralysis spell and giving Elwynn his share of the bounty. Sleeping in that morning, the long journey to Whiterun taking up most of the night, he sold off his ubundant loot (including some Elven armour from a Thalmor patrol, felled by some Stormcloak soldiers) and found that he had enough money to finally purchase the remaining spells that he wanted from Farengar.

Heeding the Call[]

With no specific reason to remain in Whiterun, Elwynn decided to heed the call of the Greybeards and ascend the Throat of the World. Believing the path up to High Hrothgar was somewhere near Riverwood, he attempted to hire a carriage to the village, but such a service was restricted to the main cities. Fortunately, he checked his bearings and learned that he needed to visit Ivarstead first instead and redirected his course.

As he crossed into unfamiliar territory, he was suddenly ambushed by a Dark Brotherhood assassin. Apparently somebody wanted the Breton dead and performed the Black Sacrament. While confused and somewhat offended, he only allowed a few minutes of speculation as to why before moving on. Moving off the beaten path, he discovered the local Stormcloak camp and dueled with a necromancer at the Ritual Stone, similar to the Mage Stone that blessed him. Elwynn, however, was not interested in this one's necromatic focus.

Along the road to Ivarstead, he reached the towers where the stolen family sword was kept. Since he was in the area, and he wasn't too far from Whiterun, he decided he might as well attend to the task. Clearing out the bandits with some skillful spellcraft, he retrieved the sword and some valuable loot. There was even a bed in one of the towers, and given the mostly sleepless previous night, he called it a night after a meal and light reading.

Waking the next morning, Elwynn decided to press onward to Ivarstead. After clearing out the courtyard of Fort Amol, where an ice mage nearly killed the Breton, he found the road he was taking was leading away from Ivarstead. After taking in the sights of some beautiful waterfalls, he backtracked and took a smaller path up the mountainside. There he was attacked by a Sabre Cat. While fighting the beast, he accidentally (although he did not realise it) Shouted and hurt two Vigilants of Stendarr by mistake. They attacked him, and he and Lydia were forced to kill them and the Sabre Cat.

Soon afterwards, he arrived at Ivarstead at the foot of the 7000 steps. Deciding to hold off on such a journey until the next day, he asked the locals what they knew about High Hrothgar and sought out an inn to put his feet up. At said in, he met an angry mill owner with a grudge against bears and the innkeeper, who told him about the haunted barrow just outside town. Deciding to investigate the barrow, Elwynn meandered out of town and came across a rampaging dragon, seemingly bursting from the barrow itself. In an epic battle that included bears and the Ivarstead guard, Elwynn and Lydia slew the fire-spewing beast. Definitely earning a good night's sleep, they hurried back into town and plunked themselves into bed.

The next morning, Elwynn started his trek up the Throat of the World. Along the way were several tablets that explained the history of High Hrothgar and the Way of the Voice, which he all read. While he did encounter a couple friendly pilgrims, the more notable encounters were several wolf attacks and a nasty frost troll that Elwynn fought nearly single-handed, as it swiftly incapacitated Lydia every time she engaged it in melee. At long last, they made it to their destination. After dropping off some supplies for the Greybeards, as provided by some friendly citizens of Ivarstead, Elwynn entered the ancient fortress.

There he spoke with Arngeir, the Greybeard who served as their general voice. After "tasting" Elwynn's voice, they taught him two new Words of Power, an extension of his Unrelenting Force and the start of a new Whirlwind Sprint shout. Arngeir then tasked Elwynn to retrieve the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller from Ustengrav in Hjaalmarch, much to the weary Breton's chagrin, as this was quite the distance away. He also made some general inquiries about the Greybeards and his general destiny, but Arngeir kept certain details secret, feeling he was not ready for said knowledge. Elwynn promptly proved him right as he nearly died while trying to pass the furious storm that barred the way further up the mountain, where their leader Paarthurnax was said to reside. Not wishing to trek all the way down the mountain in the same day, he decided to spent the night at High Hrothgar, only to find they had no extra beds. Dismayed, he resigned himself to a restless sleep on a bench in a nearby corridor.

Buying Breezehome[]

The next day, while Elwynn made his way down the mountain, he thought about all the items and books that he was carrying around with him. Both overladen with various items but unwilling to abandon them, he decided that above all else at this point in time, he needed to buy a home. After several hours of scouring Ivarstead and trying to find Klimmek, the man who asked him to deliver the Greybeards' supplies, he found him and received a sizeable cash reward. Journeying back to Whiterun, he met several colourful individuals, including a rude couple of nobles on their way to a wedding, an aging orc waiting for a good death, and a witch felled by a wild Flame Atronach, which Elwynn finished off.

Spending a night at the Bannered Mare once again, he sold a chunk of his loot and returned the stolen family sword. To Elwynn's disappointment, the man paid him by teaching him a sword and shield technique, which the magic-wielding Breton would never use. Finishing his business around town, he travelled north to eliminate the leader of Halted Stream Camp, who had a bounty on his head.

The bandits proved a greater challenge than Elwynn and Lydia could handle alone, but after summoning a Flame Atronach, they went down handily. While looting Halted Stream camp, Elwynn made some interesting discoveries. First, these bandits were mammoth poachers in possession of numerous valuable tusks, and secondly, they possessed a spellbook for transmuting iron into silver and silver into gold. With a spell like that, Elwynn decided that mining could prove to be very profitable, physical labour though it may be.

On his way back to Whiterun, he noticed a camp of bandits hidden under the rocks north of the city. Clearing it out, he found so much loot that both he and Lydia became over-encumbered. To speed himself along, he rode a stolen horse belonging to said bandits, which carried him to Whiterun's gates and then wandered away as soon as he dismounted. The Breton then hauled himself back up to the Bannered Mane for his nightly rest.

It would prove to be the last night Elwynn would sleep at the inn. Selling his abundant loot, he travelled to Dragonsreach to speak with Proventus Avenicci. Cashing in the disappointingly paltry bounty for the Halted Stream bandits, Elwynn finally purchased Breezehome. He also purchased furnishings for his bedroom, living room, and dining room. He would have purchased more, but he lacked the funds. Regardless, Elwynn was ecstatic about finally having a house and a place to store his many books, food, and other items.

The lack of complete furnishings, however, prevented complete satisfaction. After a morning of magical practice, he made his way to a marked yet unvisited location called White River Watch. Along the way, he spotted a dragon flying in the sky, and while initially startled, he summoned the courage to fight it and claim its bones and scales as loot. However, the dragon would not land and just flew away, which frustrated the mage.

Regardless, he carried on to White River Watch. The location was filled with an abundance of mushrooms, bandits, and a blind old man who Elwynn left alone. The cavern provided plenty of loot, and combined with the loot he hadn't sold before, he had more than enough to fully furnish Breezehome. Extremely pleased with his residence, he toyed around with his new alchemy station and made a sizable number of concoctions for both sale and personal use. Considering his business in Whiterun complete, he now felt ready to move onward.

Journey to Winterhold[]

Having learned all the magic he could in Whiterun Hold, Elwynn decided it was finally time to heed the advice of many innkeepers and join the College of Winterhold. After a day of recuperating from a Rockjoint disease he had picked up during magical training (via his familiar Wolfie), he set off in the wee hours of the morning. Because it was his first time visiting the college, he decided to travel there on foot, serving as a magical pilgrimage of sorts.

Along the way, he encountered a travelling mercenary who would not divulge where she was heading. Passing Whitewatch Tower, he sought to help the guards fending off some bandits, but the guards managed fine without him and snuffed his magic. At Loreius Farm, he came across a wagon with a broken wheel. It's owner was a jester named Cicero, who was transporting his deceased mother to a new crypt. He asked Elwynn to convince Loreius to fix his wheel, but the farmer refused due to distrusting the fool. The mage didn't want to leave the odd man stranded, and successfully convinced Loreius to do the right thing. The jubilant Cicero thanked Elwynn with a sizable 400 pieces of "shiny, clinky gold."

Soon the tundra of Whiterun turned to the snowy territory of The Pale. Elwynn proceeded with caution and finished off a Snowy Sabre Cat just before it could reach him. For a second time, a Dark Brotherhood assassin tried to claim the Breton's life, once again causing him to ponder why anyone would want him killed. Following the road signs into the Winterhold region, Elwynn stopped to warm himself and have lunch at the Nightgate Inn. Soon afterwards and many snowberry bushes later, the mage got excited at a large structure on the horizon, but it just turned out to be Fort Kastav, home to hostile magic users.

The fight proved difficult, the conjurer surviving two arrows to the head before going down, but Elwynn ultimately triumphed. He might have perused the interior of the fort if he weren't so focused on reaching Winterhold. He carried on to his destination and soon saw it in the distance. After fending off a hostile Breton, Elwynn was nearly killed by an Ice Wraith, but Lydia killed it and saved him. He also ran across an old orc seeking death, much like the one he met on the way back from Ivarstead. Another Snowy Sabre Cat attacked Elwynn, and after a case of grisley deja vu, he struck it down like before.

As night fell, Elwynn finally reached the once-great city of Winterhold. Caring not for anything else, he went straight for the College. To his surprise, he was barred entry by college member Faralda, who wanted to ascertain if Elwynn was worthy to enter. When asked what he sought from the college, Elwynn gave a satisfactory answer in wishing to unravel the mysteries of Aetherius, the immortal plane that provides all magic. However, Faralda also gave Elwynn a small magical test to prove his magical talent, and after plopping a Fear spell onto a seal on the college steps, he was permitted entry and the title of Apprentice.

First Lessons[]

After soaking in his first impressions of the place, Elwynn witnessed the master wizard Mirabelle Ervine talking with a visiting Thalmor named Ancano. After the high elf left, Mirabelle gave the Breton a small tour, some new robes, and assigned him his own quarters. She also directed him to Tolfdir's latest lesson, with Elwynn arriving just before he got into the swing of things. He also seemed to be the only student who agreed with his words about patience and safety. To drive this point home, Elwynn participated in a demonstration of Ward spells. Tolfdir then informed the students to meet him in the few hours outside the excavation of Saarthal to study magics past. Elwynn decided to spend the intermediate hours catching some shut-eye.

As soon as he awoke, Elwynn headed straight for Saarthal, so eager to learn that he ignored any distractions. Of course, that did not include a wolf and another Snowy Saber Cat. Regardless, he arrived at the excavation unscathed. According to Tolfdir, the site was of interest because of the prevalence of unusual magical seals. The students went about different tasks, with Elwynn sent to assist Arniel Gane in searching for magical artifacts of any sort. The young mage quickly found an amulet hanging off a wall, which he took. Suddenly spikes shot up in the doorway and barred him inside the chamber as Tolfdir watched from outside. With few other ideas, Elwynn put the amulet on and the wall he took it from started to resonate. On Tolfdir's advice, he blasted the wall with his magic, shattering it and revealing a hidden tunnel; this also retracted the bars, allowing the instructor to follow.

As the two mages proceeded onward, Elwynn had a vision of sorts... a apparition of a man warned him that he had unwittingly set things in motion, but judgment had not been passed and the Psijic Order believed in him. Elwynn passed on the warning to Tolfdir, but while the instructor was intrigued by the event, he seemed dubious of any danger and wanted to proceed onward. They soon found themselves attacked by several Draugr, which quickly went down. After reaching one chamber, Toldfir wanted to stay put and study it, but sent Elwynn to go on ahead and see what the Psijics might have been talking about. The young mage wasn't very happy; he expected college life to be less like the dungeon-running he had been doing prior.

Elwynn pressed on, enduring powerful Draugr and deceitful traps. After a time, Tolfdir caught up with him, just prior to entering a large room with a strange floating orb in the centre. As Tolfdir investigated, Elwynn fought off the draugr Jyrik Gaulderson, whose body burst into flames upon being slain. Recovered from the burning corpse was an amulet fragment and a writ of sealing. While curious of the being's story, he focussed his attention on the orb. Tolfdir, equally fascinated, refused to leave it alone and sent Elwynn to inform the Arch-Mage of it.

On the way out, Elwynn discovered another Word Wall, giving him knowledge of Ice Form, and a chest stuffed with several magical artifacts. In good spirits, he left the excavation and noticed a dragon flying overhead. Determined to kill it, he was nearly mauled to death by another Snowy Saber Cat, and by the time he finished off the beast, the dragon was nowhere to be seen. Returning to the college, he held off on speaking with the Arch-Mage and first read a book about the Forbidden Legend and the Arch-Mage Gaulder. It caught his interest and pointed him where to investigate next, but he had more pressing issues. Savos Aren, as was his name, agreed to meet Tolfdir, but put Elwynn in charge of actually researching the orb. Because of how late it was, Elwynn decided to hit the sack instead of the books.

The Stolen Books[]

Elwynn took the next day off, spending the time exploring the campus, meeting with his fellow students, and training his magical skills. Not wanting Lydia to stand around and do nothing, he sent her on a trip to Whiterun, retrieving his potions and books from his house, and selling junk he didn't want. Overall, Elwynn considered it a very productive day.

The next day got off to an interesting start when a dragon attacked the college. With nearly everyone blasting it with magic, the attack didn't last long. Elwynn garnered special attention as he absorbed the dragon's soul, though it had no immediate impact that he could ascertain. However, he hoped the cleaners would quickly remove the dragon bones sullying the courtyard.

When Elwynn proceeded with the investigation of the orb, he learned that the relivent books had been stolen by a former apprentice, seeking to curry favour with some rogue mages at Fellglow Keep. Said keep was quite far away, almost near Whiterun, so Elwynn needed time to consider his plan of action. Investigating some other assorted requests around the college, he found that they required going even further out of the way. As such, Elwynn simply decided to proceed with his assigned duties.

He and Lydia set off immediately, deciding to make ground while there was still daylight. As they travelled along, they noticed a running Stormcloak soldier (Elwynn assuming it was an exercise routine) and two Vigilants of Stendaar, though these ones were not aggressive. He also met a lone Imperial soldier, who put forth an invitation to join the Imperial Legion.

After handily defeating an Ice Wraith and several aggresive mages, Elwynn and Lydia made it into Fellglow Keep. It was dank and full of water, much to the Breton's chagrin. Thankfully, thanks to Lydia and his Flame Atronach, he was able to fend off any attackers. Then the unthinkable happened: an enemy conjurer with her own Flame Atronach overwhelmed the group and, while ultimately falling to kill Elwynn, almost struck down Lydia. In the end it was Elwynn's Flame Atronach, which, when dying, exploded. This was too much for Lydia's already weakened body to handle. Emotionally distraught, Elwynn stopped for the night and slept restlessly at the dungeon-keeper's desk, ignoring the prisoners locked behind him.

When Elwynn finally regained his composure, he went about freeing the prisoners. They were vampires, much to his surprise, but they were more interested in killing their captors than the man who freed them. As soon as the nearby necromancers and evil mages were slain, the surviving vampires fled the complex from the way Elwynn entered. Soon afterwards, he found Orthorn, the mage who had stolen the books Elwynn sought. He had been imprisoned by the evil mages and their leader, The Caller, intending to use him as a test subject instead of a student. Despite placing blame on the mage for inadvertantly causing Lydia's death, Elwynn set him free and allowed him to tag along. With his housecarl dead, any help was welcome.

Blasting their way through the keep, Elwynn endured Orthorn's constant whining until they reached The Caller. She was not happy with her students and work being destroyed, but she was willing to let Elwynn leave with the books if she let him have Orthorn. Elwynn falsely agreed, but only so he could backstab her with a magical attack. It didn't work quite as planned, and while The Caller eventually died, Orthorn fell in the resulting conflict. Nonetheless, Elwynn successfully recovered all three books.

After sorting out his inventory, he made his way back to the college. It was not an easy journey, Elwynn enduring a nearly-missed skirmish near Fellglow, two near-death attacks by an Ice Wolf and Imperial man (respectively), and constant regretful memories about Lydia. However, he made it home in one piece, and after approvingly noticing that the dragon bones had been cleaned up, he made his way to bed.

Return to Whiterun[]

Elwynn awoke the next morning a bit overtired, having decided to read the books he'd recovered before calling it a night. Regardless, he was rested enough for the day's work. Upon waking, he spoke with his fellow student Brelyna Maryon, whom he had served as a test subject for on his day off. She easily agreed to join Elwynn on his travels, the two becoming fast friends.

The young mage decided that, instead of sending a letter, it would be more appropriate to deliver news of Lydia's death back to Whiterun in person. He had unfinished business in the region anyway. However, before he left on his journey, he decided to explore the village of Winterhold itself. At the inn, he met a man named Sam Guevenne, who challenged Elwynn to a drinking contest to win a magic staff. Elwynn declined, but he considered doing it upon his return. There he also met a former College member, Nelecar, who he sold all the books he had extra copies of. Exploring the town further, he realized how run-down it was, prompting him to meet the Jarl Korir. According to the man, Winterhold used to be a much larger city before a Great Collapse caused most of it to fall into the sea. The College was spared this fate, causing Korir and his wife to blame the College itself.

After selling off some junk, receiving a bounty on a dragon, and purchasing a Coral equivalent of the Golden Claw, Elwynn made his way back to Whiterun. It was a fairly uneventful journey, only encountering a skooma dealer, who Elwynn avoided, and a thief, who was defeated handily. They reached the city just before the shops closed, allowing them to sell the rest of their loot. Elwynn got the first early night he had in days, catching up with a long 12-hour snooze.

The next day, Elwynn and Brelyna made their way to Silent Moons Camp to obtain the bandit leader's bounty. After clearing out the camp's exterior, Elwynn found notes concerning the location's Lunar Forge, which produced weapons with a particular lunar-based enchantment. He also acquired one such weapon, in addition to a healthy supply of loot. The bandit leader went down handily, doused in fire by the two mages and their atronachs. Returning to Halted Stream Camp afterwards, hoping to collect iron ore for his transmutation spell, he found some new bandits taking residence there. After mopping them up, a dragon flew overhead. However, between the two mages, their atronachs, and a helpful pack of wolves, it went down without much trouble. A surviving wolf attacked Elwynn afterwards, but Brelyna zapped it down.

After clearing Halted Stream of ore, Elwynn and Brelyna made their way back to Whiterun. While Brelyna stayed at Breezehome to prepare dinner, the young Breton made his way up to Dragonsreach, cashed in his bounties, and relaid Lydia's fate to the Jarl. His objective complete, Elwynn returned and readied himself for his last bit of business: the acquisition of Nettlebane for the Temple of Kynareth.

Restoring the Gildergreen[]

As a hagraven held Nettlebane, Elwynn read up about them in Herbane's Bestiary, and the next morning, after selling his goods, headed to Orphan Rock. On the way was Embershard Mine, where Elwynn decided to continue transmuting iron into gold ore. After almost being killed by a boulder trap, Elwynn cleared the mine out of ore. Travelling to Orphan Rock, Elwynn decided to go through Helgen, now desolate and burnt-out, where he and Brelyna were set upon by bandits. After defeating them, and exploring the site, they found it was morning and headed to Orphan Rock. After a mighty battle, against many witches, and the hagraven itself, Elwynn found Nettlebane.

On the way back, instead of going the roundabout route around the mountains, Elwynn, taking a shortcut, came across North Skybound Watch. He encountered a pedestal overlooking what he knew must have been a wide vista; however, as it was snowing, he couldn't see anything. Entering the pass underneath the watch, they encountered numerous bandits, and a giant frostbite spider, and eventually, slaying them all, made it to South Skybound Watch, at the other end of the pass. There, Elwynn and Brelyna fought a long and ferocious battle with an equally ferocious Wipmother and her Wisps. Eventually, Elwynn prevailed, but Brelyna had disappeared, dropping off a cliff during the fight. Elwynn searched long and hard outside the keep, and eventually found that Brelyna had cleverly taken shelter inside the pass, having decided that the Wispmother was too tough a fight for her.

Elwynn then decided to return to Riverwood first and to spend the evening there, so he descended down the very steep cliff face. Making it to Riverwood, he, after waiting for a period, found that Brelyna hadn't caught him up yet. He knew that he had told her to meet at the Sleeping Giant Inn, so he was understandably worried. He waited until morning, and when there was still no sign of Brelyna, he quickly returned to the Skybound Watches, and with great joy and maybe a little anger, found Brelyna there. After telling her of what he had done, they returned to Whiterun.

Returning to the Temple of Kynareth, Elwynn showed Nettlebane to Danica, to her great surprise, for she hadn't actually thought he would make it back. She then told him that as the blade had been touched by Hagravens, she really didn't wish to touch it, and asked Elwynn if he would do the next steps. Elwynn, agreeing readily, was surprised and disappointed when she announced that he would have to do some more travelling, to retrieve the sap of another tree, the Eldergleam, to restore the Gildergreen. On hearing this, a pilgrim called Maurice Jondrelle asked if he could 'tag along' with Elwynn, as he had long dreamed of seeing the Eldergleam. Elwynn acquiesced, and Maurice joined their merry band.

Looking at his map, Elwynn was amazed that Danica had remarked it was just to the east, as it was 'bloody miles away!' He nonetheless had long wished to visit the area around the Eldergleam, and so soon set off, with Maurice and Brelyna in tow. He then decided to, on the way, visit Shimmermist Cave, as he had been informed by a guard that something had been sneaking around there. He was delighted by the unearthly spectacle within the cave, like nothing he had ever seen before, and by the numerous alchemical ingredients. However, once they came to a large chamber, they were attacked by a Falmer, and Elwynn's atronach, going rogue, killed the Falmer and Maurice. Encountering more of these vile Falmer, he and Brelyna descended into the cave, eventually coming to Shimmermist Grotto. In there, after fighting more Falmer, they encountered some Chaurus, which Elwynn was horrified by. He ran away, and let Brelyna and the atronachs deal with it, but was left disappointed by the show, which he considered an anticlimax. Encountering two more, Elwynn stayed out of the fight again.

At the end of the grotto, Elwynn and Brelyna discovered some Dwemer ruins, and within, a tough Falmer, and one of the Dwemer's greatest constructions - the Centurion. Running far away, without seeing the Centurion but getting hit multiple times by a Gloomlurker, Elwynn and his atronach managed to defeat the Falmer. Returning to the final chamber, he caught sight of the Centurion, emerging from the fog like a figure from a nightmare. Hiding behind an archway the Centurion couldn't get through, and dodging its magical attacks, he and Brelyna finally defeated it.

Exiting the cave (and avoiding having to jump into the freezing pool on the way out) they found a dragon circling the area. Not wanting to tangle with it, they tried to remain as unnoticeable as possible. However, the dragon failed to leave, and remained, roaring and circling. Elwynn got rather fed up, and so started moving towards Valtheim Keep, now kind of wanting the dragon to attack, and so summoning his atronachs and starting to fire fireballs at it. The dragon wasn't interested or even noticing, even flying over Elwynn's very head a couple of times without doing anything. Running to Valtheim Keep, Elwynn decided to swim across the river, a decision he regretted when he was beset by slaughterfish and mud crabs. Finally reaching Valtheim, he and Brelyna settled down for the night.

In the morning, the two resumed their journey towards the Eldergleam sanctuary. Elwynn was again attacked by a Dark Brotherhood Assassin, who was more tough than usual, but he was dispatched swiftly. Elwynn angrily contemplated leaving a note on the assassin's body. However, he calmed himself by picking flowers. They then found a spectacular waterfall, as the sky began to cloud over, and at the bottom, Mixwater Mill. After exploring the area, and picking a few alchemical ingredients, they set off once again, avoiding a giant camp, and finally coming to some hot springs. There, along with some hunters, they took a much needed hot bath. However, their relaxation was cut short when a dragon rose from the nearby trees, sending them to shore to put on their clothes. The dragon didn't attack, so they ran for the Eldergleam Sanctuary, which was extremely close. They then entered the cave.

Upon entering the cave, Elwynn remarked to Brelyna that he hoped that the cave wouldn't contain any Chaurus. He was forced to take back this upon entering the sanctuary itself, and beholding its wondrous beauty. Even Brelyna broke her travelling silence in order to remark about the place's impressiveness, while Elwynn declaimed about what he saw (in blank verse, of course). After speaking to the pilgrims in the place, Elwynn cleared the way through to the Eldergleam with Nettlebane, by forcing the roots to retract. He took the sap from the Eldergleam, but they were beset by Spriggans, who killed the pilgrims. After mourning the deaths, Elwynn and Brelyna exited the cave, and visited another hot spring site, where they found some tents and set off towards Whiterun.

After a long and uneventful journey, they arrived back in Whiterun. They went to the Bannered Mare, and traded stories with the locals, while eating and drinking. Elwynn had thought that this would be the last night he would spend in Whiterun for a while, so he partied accordingly. They returned to Breezehome, and had a good night. In the morning, he returned the sap to Danica, trained his Restoration with her, and sold his goods. He then proceeded to take the carriage to Winterhold. The next time he visited Whiterun, the Gildergreen was in full bloom.

An Unexpected Journey[]

Upon arriving at Winterhold, Elwynn decided to stop off at the Frozen Hearth, the local inn, on the spur of the moment, and to take Sam Guevenne, a seemingly local man, up on his offer of a drinking contest. After preparing himself, he started the contest. They each downed two, before Sam revealed that he probably couldn't drink anymore, and if Elwynn could down one more of his 'special brew' he would win the staff. Elwynn, a little tipsy by now, drank it down, and proceeded to black out.

He was then startled awake by a priestess of Dibella, who was called Senna, calling him a drunken blasphemer. He was forced to clean up the temple, which he had apparently messed up during the night, before the priestess gave him any information. Apparently, he had mentioned something about Rorikstead in his babbling, so she suggested he head there.

Upon exiting the temple, Elwynn found, to his shock and horror, that he was in Markarth, the other side of Skyrim from Winterhold! To compound his misery, he then witnessed a vicious crime taking place on the streets - a stabbing! Elwynn fled, vowing to not return to that city in a hurry. Hiring the carriage, he quickly returned to the college.

The Psijic Order[]

Elwynn requested Brelyna remain in his room while he sorted out his belongings, and then return the books. He found, to his surprise, that the orb from Saarthal had been removed, and placed as the centrepiece of the Hall of Attainment. Elwynn didn't think this was the best of plans, but decided not to argue. He spoke to Tolfdir, who asked him for help in finding an item of sentimental value, and then headed upstairs to Urag, who rewarded him, for retrieving the books, with skill books! Elwynn was very happy with this gift, and thanked Urag many times over.

Urag had suggested talking to Tolfdir about the books retrieved, and he did so. Tolfdir made a note of re-reading 'Night of Tears', and then began talking to Elwynn about the orb. However, to both Tolfdir and Elwynn's indignation, Ancano interrupted, and demanded Elwynn accompany him. He revealed that a member of the Psijic Order was in the college, and wanted to speak to Elwynn personally. When Elwynn enquired into how much this concerned him, he replied (rather snappily) that he would ask the questions. So Elwynn followed him, not out of a desire to obey Ancano's orders, but because a Psijic Order visit is important.

When the young Breton arrived at the Arch-Mage's quarters, the Monk seemed to cast a spell upon the others, rendering them stationary. He then revealed that this was to keep their conversation private, as it was of great importance. The Eye of Magnus had already began to interfere with the Psijic Order's intentions, and they considered it very dangerous. Apparently, the Eye had been too dangerous, and if it remained in Skyrim, it would be misused. He offered a hint, to seek out the Augur of Dunlain, someone who apparently had been a student, and was now 'something different'.

Elwynn, finding out from Savos that Tolfdir apparently knew something, sought him out, and tried to talk, but they were interrupted by a dragon attack! After Elwynn had obtained its soul, he went looking for Tolfdir, but he couldn't find him. Eventually, he was found in the teachers' quarters, and Elwynn learnt that the Augur was apparently in the 'Midden', an area underneath the College. He, not wanting to do this just yet, spent the day resting, carrying out enchanting and a very productive session of alchemy.

Adventures around Winterhold[]

The next few days were spent in similar fashion. Elwynn practised his spells, and with the aid of the tutors, slowly improved. Eventually, they thought he was able to make use of more advanced magic, so they permitted him to buy more advanced spell tomes. There was just one problem, the tomes were expensive. Elwynn was therefore forced to go out to gather some cash, to buy his books. Exploring Whistling Mine, whose inhabitants, he learned, were not evil, he tried to mine ore (to sell) but it didn't go well, so he left. He went to Journeyman's Nook instead, getting ambushed by a bandit. With his new Fireball spell, the bandit was blown off his feet and into the afterlife. Exploring, Elwynn found a dead mage, but little else.

Exploring the seas around Winterhold, Elwynn found Bleakcoast Cave, and descending within, to his horror, found frost trolls. However, as his magical prowess had greatly increased, Elwynn found them a doddle to handle. As they headed back to Winterhold, they stopped at a rather interesting shipwreck, and within, a journal describing the last words of a member of the Dunmer House Telvanni, which was supposed to have been forwarded to his son, called Brandyl.

Finally reaching the college, a dragon flew over, and Elwynn lost Brelyna in the confusion. She was eventually found outside the College, on the bridge, and together they returned to their quarters. In the morning, the College was again attacked by a dragon, this time a particularly vicious one of the Blood variety. After a ferocious battle, Elwynn deposited the bones and scales in his room, and set out again. While musing upon the pros and cons (namely, the Thieves Guild) of going to Riften, he encountered two Winterhold guards lying dead in the street. He traded in their goods with Birna, the shopkeeper, and then headed out again. He found an intriguing ruin called Snow Veil Sanctum - however, the way inside was barred by a large iron gate, which Elwynn couldn't get past. He also found what seemed to be a hunters' camp, with a horse standing free nearby. Not wanting the horse to suffer from the freezing cold, he mounted it, and rode it up to what seemed like the front entrance to Snow Veil Sanctum. However, this entrance was still impenetrable.

Elwynn headed back to Whistling Mine, but on the way, encountered a very strange Nord, who was aspiring to become a wizard by using a staff of raising the dead. After conversing with him, Elwynn entered Stillborn Cave, and after nearly dying many times, he cleared the cave of Falmer and Chaurus, and returned to the College. The next morning, after selling his loot, Elwynn set out to visit the Shrine of Azura, as per Brelyna's wishes. After spotting the majestic structure from afar, and killing a sabre cat, Elwynn finally reached the Shrine. To his surprise, he found a Dunmer priest, called Aranea, who wanted him to find an Elven mage in Winterhold. The young mage returned to Winterhold, quickly dealt with a dragon with the help of the tutors, and summarily realised that he had seen a mage in the Winterhold inn. He chatted to this mage, and found out that a mage called Malyn had stolen an item belonging to Azura to make himself immortal. His hideout was now a fortress on the lake next to Riverwood. After putting it on his to-do list, Elwynn returned to the College and relaxed by reading a book.

The next morning, the two set out to Mount Anthor, after a light breakfast. Summoning his newly named frost and flame atronachs, the mages quickly defeated the dragon, and Elwynn learnt a new word of power. Since it had taken less time than he expected, Elwynn decided to visit Sightless Pit, a cave he had spotted earlier. The entrance was a straight drop down, with no returning, and after musing on the dangers, the two jumped into the pit, landing in a lake at the bottom, to the annoyance of Elwynn. They fought through a bandit hideout and a Dwemer ruin, battling Falmer all the way, and returned to the surface by means of a handy elevator. On the way back to the College, he met a courier, bearing a letter, advising Elwynn to turn his attention to a Skyborn Altar, but he regarded this letter with some suspicion.

The following day, he headed out to Fort Kastav, after selling some of his wares. On the way, he encountered some revellers, who wished to ply him with mead - however, Elwynn felt it to be too early to indulge. He also met with M'aiq again. Arriving at the fort, Elwynn had a mishap with J'zargo's scrolls, causing a misunderstanding with Brelyna, but they managed to reconcile, and finish clearing out the fort. Elwynn returned to Winterhold, cashed in a bounty, and resolved to seek the Augur of Dunlain, in the Midden, a dungeon underneath the College. The two encountered a variety of interesting things, like an exotic forge, an odd relic of a hand, and finally the Augur, who appeared as a glowing ball of light.

This odd entity proceeded to give Elwynn a variety of warnings, including about the Thalmor, Ancano, and bid him tell the Archmage about the Staff of Magnus. Elwynn did do this, received a new circlet for his 'initiative', and was told by Mirabelle, who informed him the Synod were looking for it, and might be in Mzulft. Elwynn, however, had other plans.

A Jaunt Into The Big Wide World[]

Elwynn decided, instead, to clear out a few of the tasks he had received, starting with reforging the Black Star. The two headed back to Whiterun, and once there, sold all their excess wares. He was very pleased, however, to see the Gildergreen blooming, in full flower. Leaving Whiterun in the late afternoon, they spent the night in Riverwood. They found the entrance to the submerged outpost, and to Elwynn's irritation, it was indeed very wet inside. Luckily, he found a spare set of clothes in a knapsack, 'for the wet parts'. and after fighting through the keep, found the Azura's star, broken, and a grimoire by some Malyn Varen, proclaiming his ascent to immortality, which Elwynn scoffed at, considering his broken skeleton on a chair nearby. Having exited the ruins, they swam to a nearby island, which was being circled by a dragon.

They ignored it, however, and proceeded to swing northwards towards Rorikstead, reaching it just after midnight. The next morning, they were accosted by a rude Nord woman, who, to Elwynn's surprise and horror, drew her sword on them. However, after a quick duel, she lay dead. Elwynn was surprised to run across the eponymous Rorik of Rorikstead, but was disappointed to find there wasn't a trader in the village. Instead, he found out that during his drunken stupor with Sam, he had sold a prize-winning goat to a giant, which he was told to get. On the way, they were accosted by a sabre cat, which Elwynn ran away from and Brelyna killed, but managed to give him a disease before dying. Killing the giant, and leading Gleda the goat back to the farmer, Elwynn found out, to his annoyance, that the farmer only recalled something about Ysolda, in Whiterun. Grumbling, he returned there the next morning, selling some wares, and accidentally getting roped into doing some blacksmithing. He then spoke to Ysolda, and was horrified at the news that he had apparently got himself engaged to someone. An additional shock was the location of their 'engagement' - all the way out near Windhelm. He decided to go there, transporting all his ingredients to Winterhold en route.

Setting out from Winterhold the next day, he made a plan to visit both his fiancée, and the site of the Staff of Magnus, in one visit. During the journey, they encountered wolves, wispmothers, Companions, and a quick diversion through Windhelm, but to top it all off, they fought a dragon near their destination. This one, however, had the misfortune to encounter a giant camp, who swiftly defeating it. Taking the wedding ring from his fiancée, a hagraven, they then set off to Mzulft, defeating a bear on the way.

After a long and tortuous slog through the Dwemer ruins, fighting machines, chaurus and Falmer, Elwynn learned from a Synod mage that the Staff of Magnus was in Labyrinthian. Exiting, he encountered a Psijic Monk, who advised him to hurry back to the college as quickly as possible. On the way back, he learnt a word of power, and spent the night at the inn in the small hamlet of Kynesgrove.

Turmoil at the College[]

The next day, at the College, events moved thick and fast. Ancano began doing something to the Eye, and when the other mages tried to stop him, there was a mighty explosion, which killed the Arch-Mage. He also created numerous creatures in Winterhold, which Elwynn helped defeat. With the College in chaos and the Arch-Mage dead, Elwynn was immediately sent to Labyrinthian to get the Staff. Their journey was interrupted by a giant and a dragon, as well as learning from Ysolda that the wedding was due to take place in a place called Morvunskar, but they did get to Labyrinthian, an area infested with Frost Trolls. Delving into the dungeon, following the Arch-Mage's earlier expedition (or rather, their ghosts), the two fought skeletal dragons, trolls, wispmothers, flame traps, and of course, the inevitable waves and waves of draugr. At the end, they managed to defeat the Dragon Priest Morokei, who had been sealed in by Savos, many years earlier.

Labyrinthian was huge, and Elwynn marked a couple of places he would visit on his return, on his map. But they had to leave. On the journey back to the College, they found the source of power in Skyborn Altar. Returning, they found that Mirabelle had been killed, but managed to use the Staff of Magnus to break through to Ancano, and kill him. The Psijics took the Eye of Magnus away, and in the process acclaimed Elwynn as Arch-Mage, a title which Tolfdir happily agreed to. Elwynn, however, was in utter shock and complete bewilderment. He slowly made his way up to the Arch-Mages - no, his - quarters, and once there, still in a haze of confusion, reflected on his new job, and his new responsibilities as the foremost representative of the College. He vowed that he would do everything possible to get as good a wizard as possible, so that everyone, including himself, would see him, truly, as the most powerful wizard in Skyrim.

Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold[]

He decided that his first act as Arch-Mage would be to reforge Azura's Star. Having a premonition that having the Priestess of Azura help would result in his soul being sent inside the Star, and a quick death following, he spoke to Nelacar instead, who did exactly the same thing. After a long and difficult fight, Malyn lay dead, and a new artefact was added to Elwynn's collection. The two then fought a Blood Dragon, and soon departed to find Enthir's staff, on the first excursion of College business. They spent the night at Kynesgrove, and arrived at Ansilvund the next morning.

After facing many challenges, including a torturously difficult puzzle, the two confronted the mad necromancer of the ruins, and retrieved the staff. Returning to Winterhold, and trading over the goods, Elwynn then set out to Dawnstar, to visit a museum he had heard about long before. A long and mostly uneventful journey was brightened up by the sight of some bandits unwisely attacking a giant camp, but Elwynn's hopes of immediately settling down in Dawnstar's inn with food and a book were scuppered by the local priest, who roped him into a scheme to help the town with its nightmare problem. This particular adventure was notable for its oddness: Elwynn was sent back into the past to deactivate the poisonous fume known as the Miasma; and further, he had to descend quite far by himself, into the depths of the temple; but in the end, the influence of the Daedric Prince Vaermina was removed from the inhabitants of Dawnstar.

In the morning, after a dragon attack and a good night's sleep, Elwynn explored the town. The museum turned out to be rather underwhelming, with only one, quite small exhibit, on the Mythic Dawn, an infamous cult. Elwynn was also turned off by the proprietor's demeanor, and so, after a night at the inn, returned to Winterhold, clearing out a bandit fort on the way. The next day, the two set out for Morvunskar, to finally figure out what had happened on his night of drunken debauchery. The truth was revolutionary - Sam Guevenne was actually Sanguine, the Daedric Prince of Debauchery, and as a reward for Elwynn's persistence, he was given an extremely powerful staff.

Brelyna

Brelyna Maryon, Elwynn's great friend and companion, whom he would fall in love with.

Elwynn's next task was to retrieve the Helm of Winterhold for the Jarl. He did so with speed, and for his trouble, was named Thane of Winterhold. With that done, he returned to Labyrinthian to explore the ruins: Shalidor's Maze was a difficult adventure, with a Word Wall and a diadem as a reward; and Lost Valkygg equally so, with several tough fights. He then scaled a very steep mountain to retrieve a diamond he had missed earlier, and received dreams about, then descended into the plains of Whiterun Hold to find some books for the College library.

They then continued to find some writings of Arch-Mage Shalidor, stopping off at Rorikstead for some refreshment. Elwynn quite enjoyed the new sights, sounds and landscape of the Reach, and arriving at their destination, the two defeated a spider-enchanting wizard. Elwynn's next task was to clear out his overcrowded inventory. Thus, after helping the inhabitants of the village of Karthwasten, he took the Markarth carriage to Winterhold, and deposited his wares there.

Quests of the Dragon Variety[]

Elwynn decided that his next task would be to start the mission the Greybeards had set him so long before; that is, to descend into the ruin of Ustengrav and retrieve the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller. Descending into the ruins, battling draugr and spiders, they found that someone had taken the horn, and left a note, summoning them to Riverwood, much to the Arch-Mage's shock and disappointment. They then set off on the long trek to Riverwood, stopping off at Whiterun to sell some wares. At the inn in Riverwood, Elwynn was amazed to learn that the seemingly harmless innkeeper was the one who took the horn! Furthermore, she had a secret room underneath the inn, in which she had been conducting research! Apparently, this showed that dragons were coming back to life, and that the next one to do so would be near Kynesgrove, in Eastmarch.

The trek there was long and tiring, with Delphine a taciturn, but handy companion, with Elwynn extremely impressed with her skills with bow and sword. Reaching the little village, all three were astonished to find a black dragon bringing another back to life from a burial mound - it even spoke, and sneered at Elwynn for daring to call himself Dragonborn. It then ordered the other to kill the party, which it happily failed to do, and died itself. Delphine then revealed that she was a member of the ancient order of the Blades, an order of dragonslayers. She suspected that the blame for dragons coming back should be laid at their door, and told Elwynn to meet her back at Riverwood sometime in the future, so she could gather her thoughts and plan something out.

Elwynn next headed to High Hrothgar, but the trip was far more hazardous than he had anticipated, being beset by wolves, bears, giant spiders, and even an assassin. At the ancient monastery, the Greybeards taught Elwynn the final word of Unrelenting Force, and acclaimed him formally as Dovahkiin, in the dragon tongue. He also received the location of a Word of Power, in some forgotten cave west of Riverwood. Conveniently though, it was on the road to Markarth, which Elwynn, with a new interest in the Dwarves, really liked the look of.

He thus set out, to Whiterun first, to sell some wares, but on the way, he had a strange premonition. The vision showed him getting killed by an Ancient Vampire on the road, so he made preparations, consuming potions and everything, but then he found out that the vampire had been slain by two Vigilants of Stendarr! After this disheartening event, they spent a night in Breezehome. and set out to Sunderstone Gorge. On the way, they slew a giant and his mammoth, with some great difficulty, for the steward of Whiterun, a task which Elwynn completed with reluctance, out of affection for the mammoths.

Markarth, City of Stone[]

Then, clearing out Sunderstone Gorge and finding the Word of Power deep within, Elwynn and Brelyna undertook the final push to Markarth. However, upon reaching the city, they found it still in a state of chaos, and Elwynn was covertly told to meet someone at the Shrine to Talos in the city. Already distracted by all the fabulous Dwemer architecture, Elwynn put that aside, and spent a night at the inn. After a somewhat uncomfortable night, speaking with some of the inn's patrons, and listening to a fantastic rendition of "The Age of Aggression" from the local bard, he spent the rest of the day exploring Markarth, often getting lost in it's labyrinthian streets.

At the end of the day however, Elwynn came across a Vigilant, attempting to find a Daedra in an abandoned house. Unfortunately, the quest soon went south, with the Daedra turning out to be very powerful, driving the Vigilant insane. forcing Elwynn to kill him. Forced by the Daedra to descend into the bowels of the house, Elwynn reached a shrine to the Daedra, who turned out to be no less than Molag Bal, a Daedric Prince. He commanded Elwynn to bring him a follower of Boethiah, but the terrified Elwynn refused (not aloud, of course). He finished his day by doing some light detective work on the murder.

In the morning, Elwynn continued exploring the city, and then made his way into Understone Keep. To his surprise, he ran across Calcelmo, the famed Dwemer Scholar, almost immediately! Calcelmo told Elwynn that he could have access to both the ruins and his personal museum if he cleared out a giant spider lurking in the ruins, a deal which Elwynn accepted without any hesitation whatsoever. He then spoke to the Jarl on the ongoing rebellion, and noticed with anger the presence of Thalmor in Markarth.

The day rapidly got worse after that. When speaking to a Silver-Blood leader, the house came under attack from Forsworn, and the leader's wife was killed. Then, he was arrested by guards when he picked a lock he wasn't supposed to, and to cap it all of, was engaged in a brawl while the guards (and Brelyna) watched on! Elwynn cooled off though with a strong drink at the inn.

Elwynn spent the next day in clearing out the Dwarven ruins underneath Markarth, following in the footsteps of a doomed expedition before him. Calcelmo rewarded him appropriately, and gave him the key to the his personal Dwemer Museum. They visited it the next day, after receiving a cryptic message from a cannibal in the Hall of the Dead, and admired the many artifacts in the Museum from all angles.

However, things soon came crashing down. The corrupt guards of the city arrested Elwynn, having had enough of his poking around! They stashed him in Cidhna Mine, which was said to be the most secure prison in Skyrim. Elwynn was forced to ally himself with the King in Rags, Madanach, in order to escape, but also had to commit an abhorrent act of unprovoked murder, which he did with great reluctance. The Arch-Mage, clad in rags, fled through the old Dwarven ruins with the Forsworn, who turned out to be excellent in battle.

They emerged into Markarth, were Madanach restored Elwynn's property to him, and then set out on a rampage through the city, killing guards left, right, and centre. Meanwhile, Elwynn was on a (considerably less violent) mini-rampage of his own, up to see if the Jarl had anything to do with this injustice. He swore that he would never return to the City of Stone if it turned out to be so. However, upon seeing him, the Jarl quickly and sincerely apologised, and Elwynn, somewhat mollified, returned to the inn.

City Within, Elwynn Without[]

The next day, however, Elwynn received a letter from Tolfdir, all the way back at the College. He sent word of the coming Yule feast, which Elwynn hurried back to, not wishing to miss the revelry. After a few days of rest and relaxation, the two mages set out once again, first to retrieve a ring for a shopkeeper in Dawnstar, and then back to the Reach, to explore the area further. After meandering their way across the Whiterun plains, they found a statue waylaid in a Forsworn camp, and spent the night in Rorikstead.

Awakening at the crack of dawn, the two mages, with some guards, fought off a dragon which was attacking the village. Wending their way through the ravines of the Reach, they helped a mine with its draugr situation, receiving a hefty amount of recompense, and then set out once again. However, Brelyna must have misheadr Elwynn's command to sneak past a Forsworn encampment - the two had no choice but to battle the entire camp. Fortunately, they succeeded, and then fought through yet more legions of Forsworn to solve the legend of Red Eagle, fighting the corpse of the man himself at the end. They then visited an Orc Stronghold, and headed back to Markarth.

The next day, the "Grand Exploration of the Reach", as Elwynn - rather grandiloquently - called it, began. They started with a visit to a tower called Dead Crone Rock, looking for a piece of Mehrune's Razor. After clearing out a Forsworn camp, complete with hagraven, they found said pommel stone, received a Word of Power, and admired the wonderful views at the top of the tower.

On the way back to Markarth, Elwynn, feeling a tad adventurous, committed a number of unusual acts. First, he waded waist-deep into a cave, then he almost fell off an extremely tall waterfall, and finally, failed to Whirlwind Sprint across a smaller waterfall, fell in, and was swept away by the current. In an extremely weird turn of events, Elwynn found that he had actually enjoyed the experience, and considered a relaxation of his attitudes towards water, and getting wet! Somewhat unnerved by himself, he reunited with Brelyna and returned to Markarth to dry out.

The following day, the mages set out once again. First, they visited a Dwemer structure, which turned out to have wonderful views over the Reach, along with some treasure. Descending from the tower, they visited the cannibal Eola at Reachcliff Cave, and cleared out some of the ruins with her - unfortunately, she turned hostile to the two after she was hit by one too many of Elwynn's fireballs. Somewhat disappointed, and with a lot of the day still remaining, Elwynn decided to visit the Lover Stone, one of the Guardian Stones, for a scenic view. Disappointment, however would turn out to be the central theme of the day, as night had fallen when they reached there, and so they spent the night in Karthwasten.

In the morning, the Arch-Mage and his companion first freed the priest of Boethiah at Bruca's Leap Redoubt, just to see what would happen, and then headed across the Karth River to adventure in that area. They cleared out a bandit bar overrun with Falmer, found a hunter's shack with absolutely brilliant views, and then headed back to Markarth. In the City of Stone, Elwynn was forced by Molag Bal to murder the priest of Boethiah, and then, shaken by this, resolved to leave Markarth for the final time.

A Momentary Diversion[]

Elwynn then returned to the College. He checked in with Tolfdir, his Master Wizard, to see if everything was running fine in his absence, and then spent almost a week relaxing and improving his magical arts, becoming proficient enough in them to be able to use several more difficult spells. The two then set out for Whiterun, and spent a couple of nights in Breezehome, while Elwynn practiced his enchanting, splitting his time between the forge and the Enchanting Table in Farengar Secret-Fire's office.

After he felt he had become proficient enough, he set out to Ivarstead, to hand in ten bear pelts to Temba Wide-Arm, and to test his magical abilities, solo. He cleared out the some of Shroud Heart Barrow, but it turned out to be much larger than first thought, and so Elwynn brought Brelyna out of the inn to clear the whole barrow of Draugr. This being done, they set out for Riverwood, to see what plans Delphine had come up with. She had indeed come up with a corker, involving Elwynn sneaking away from one of the Thalmor Ambassador's drinking parties to steal her secret files.

To Solitude[]

This was in Solitude, so Elwynn set out for that far corner of Skyrim. Arriving in the city, he witnessed the execution of the man who had let Ulfric Stormcloak out of the city after his duel with High King Torygg, which brought back unwanted memories for Elwynn. He then spent a night in the capital's luxurious inn, the Winking Skeever, and the next day, started his exploration of Solitude.

The first stop of the day was at Radiant Rainment, a clothing shop, where, despite the rude proprietor, Elwynn bought an enchanted ring. The next shop, Bits and Pieces, was far more welcoming, and Elwynn was able to conduct a fair bit of business, selling all his wares that needed selling, and buying a circlet for his alchemy. He then found the source of the Spiced Wine, a new beverage which Elwynn quite liked the look of, and explored the Bards College - their library was quite large, and worthy of Elwynn's admiration, but not a patch on the College of Winterhold's (of course).

Entering the Blue Palace, the Arch-Mage exchanged a few words with Jarl Elisif and her steward, and then entered an old, abandoned wing of the palace, which he had been told about by a seemingly mad person outside. It turned out to take him to another dimension, that of Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness, inside the mind of a mad Emperor. To free himself, he had to complete several odd tasks with the aid of an even odder staff, which he was allowed to keep as a reward.

While exploring Castle Dour, Elwynn overheard a bit of startling news - Ulfric Stormcloak was planning to attack Whiterun. This information prompted him to have a think at joining the war on the Imperial Legion's side, if only to protect his beloved city. While pondering, he popped down to the Solitude lighthouse, to have a good think. Back in the Winking Skeever, and over a bottle of Spiced Wine, Elwynn thought it out, and decided to let the matter lie for the moment, as he did not know both sides of the story, and because any of his choices would reflect on the College of Winterhold. Be that as it may, he intended to head to Windhelm in the near future, to see what Ulfric Stormcloak had to say.

Elwynn then set out, intending to rescue Thorald from Thalmor custody, but, as usual, got distracted. In this case, it was by the Daedric Prince Meridia, who wanted him to fight through her temple to free it from a necromancer who had corrupted it. Malkoran turned out to be an extremely difficult foe to defeat, but Elwynn, drinking copious amounts of potions and using the Paralyze spell liberally, managed to battle through. In reward, he was given a sword which glowed golden, and the patronage of a Daedric Prince. Returning to Solitude, they sold their goods, and spent a night of revelry at the inn, during which Elwynn heard something about the Festival of the Burning of King Olaf being forbidden.

More Adventures in the Haafingar Hold[]

Thus, Elwynn took up the cause of the fellow College, to rescue a lost book of poetry from a ruin near Morthal. The weather on the journey was miserable, drizzling all the way. However, Elwynn did a good bit of adventuring in the ruins - slaying Draugr left, right and centre, and helping a ghostly bard avenge himself by killing the corpse of King Olaf One-Eye. On the way back, Elwynn was very amused at the sight of his Dremora Lord making mincemeat of some bandits masquerading as Legion soldiers. By this time, the drizzle had grown into a full-blown thunderstorm, and so the two took refuge in the tavern in the village of Dragon Bridge.

In the morning, the two explored the rather small village, and after getting slightly lost, returned to Solitude. At the College, he helped Viarmo, the headmaster, rewrite some of the damaged parts of the text, and attended the recitation to the Jarl. The festival was allowed to go ahead, and Elwynn, Brelyna, and most of Solitude's population sang and drank long into the night. The next day, they finally made the trek to rescue Thorald Grey-Mane, fighting through hordes of Thalmor soldiers to do so. Thorald gave Elwynn a cryptic message to pass to his mother, and bidding Elwynn well, ran into the distance. In a rare show of energy, Elywnn and Brelyna decided to follow the orders of the Solitude steward, and clear out Wolfskull Cave.

In the ruin, the Arch-Mage found necromancers performing a ritual to bring back the Wolf Queen Potema of Solitude. Defeating them, they returned to Solitude, where they received the Steward's sincere thanks, and a personal quest from Jarl Elisif, to put a horn belonging to her late husband on a Shrine of Talos, which he did immediately, returning to Whiterun, his second home, to do so. While there, he sold his wares, warned Jarl Balgruuf about what he had overheard in Castle Dour. Having deposited the horn, Elwynn returned to Solitude, and found a Moon Amulet for a Khajiit warrior, after killing loads of pirates, and headed back to the inn.

The next day, the two headed off to Folgunthur, to further investigate the Gauldur legend. In the tomb, Elwynn found the journal of a dead adventurer, which outlined the lore and history of the Gauldur legend. Intrigued by what the reforged amulet would look like, Elwynn resolved to complete this quest post-haste. He defeated Mirkrul, one of the sons of Gauldur, and returned to Solitude. The next few days were devoted to exploring the Haafingar hold, including numerous caves, ruins, and barrows. In one, Elwynn contracted Vampirism, but managed to heal it with a disease. In another, he fought a Dragon Priest, and took his signature mask, a feat he repeated in one ruin closer to Dawnstar. In a third ruin, Deepwood Redoubt, he found a beautiful cavern open to the sky, inhabited by Forsworn, and fought through legions to reach, and subdue, their leader, a hagraven, in Hag's End. Then, in the catacombs beneath Solitude, Elwynn rooted out and destroyed the Wolf Queen's spirit once and for all.

Without Brelyna[]

Elwynn then made a decision he had been thinking about for a long time. He left Brelyna at the college, feeling that she should do what she had come to Skyrim to do - learn. However, as a sign of his trust in her, he made her a temporary tutor, so she could give the practical knowledge obtained from her adventuring with the Arch-Mage to the other students, and perhaps even the tutors. Elwynn considered taking another companion with him, but in the end, decided to strike out alone, in order to make sure he was advancing in his magical ability at a good pace.

Meeting Delphine's contact at the Winking Skeever inn, Elwynn heard the plan. However, he managed to misunderstand one crucial detail - that he couldn't take anything else with him, and the contact would smuggle in what he needed. Thus, when he arrived at the embassy, he had none of his speciality gear on him, much to his dismay. His battles in the Embassy, already made tougher by the lack of Brelyna, thus got even harder, and he had to often take tactical retreats. In the end though, he battled through, retrieving several top-secret Thalmor files. Taking the carriage back to Whiterun, he retrieved his gear from Delphine at Riverwood, who decided to find another Blade in hiding, Esbern, in Riften. On the way, Elwynn visited Geirmund's Hall, the resting place of the last Gauldur brother, and took the amulet fragment from him. He then made a quick detour back to the Reach, to reforge the amulet into one, did a few quick jobs at the College, and then set out once again, for Riften, and Esbern.

The Arch-Mage had some things to take care of on the way, though. He first took care of a magical anomaly near Windhelm - a leftover of the Ancano Incident. He retrieved a couple of items from a bandit hideout at Stony Creek Cave and returned through Ansilvund to get a battle-axe. Returning Kharjo's amulet to him, he decided, on the spur of the moment, to take the Khajiit on as a follower. Arriving in Riften, Elwynn was immediately accosted by a whole heap of people, but went straight to the inn, the Bee and Barb, to sleep away what was left of the night.

In The Rift[]

For the next two days, Elwynn explored Riften, getting a good sense of the city. He helped a man get his horse from the influential, and corrupt, Black-Briar family, and then started an exploration of the Rift. He helped the Jarl to rid her city of the skooma dealers infesting it, and explored further to get a Word of Power and slay a dragon.

However, on the third day, tragedy happened. In an unexpectedly tough fight with some bandits in a fort near Riften, a misplaced ice storm spell fell Kharjo. Elwynn continued onwards sadly, and returned a lexicon to a Dwarven ruin in the mountains. He then explored the surrounding areas, killing a dragon and finding the final word of the Dismay shout, and then visiting another Guardian Stone, where he faced a powerful pyromancer, before heading back to Riften. The next day, he visited Darklight Tower, where he helped a repenting witch overcome the rest of her coven, and an Orc Stronghold, which requested help against a curse which had struck them. After hiring a new follower, the mage Marcurio from the inn in Riften, he returned to Winterhold to collect some ingredients which had been requested by numerous people, stopping off at Ivarstead and Windhelm on the way, to collect some stuff for the Court Wizard of Riften.

At the College, they fought a dragon, and a dremora in the dungeons beneath. Heading back to the Rift, he delivered his ingredients to the various alchemists around, helped clear out a mine of spiders at Shor's Stone, and finally purchased a house in Riften, before being named Thane of the hold. His first act was to help the Orc Stronghold, but in the struggle to restore their stronghold's fortunes, its arrogant, but cowardly leader was killed, with Elwynn receiving a warhammer in recompense. He then killed a dragon and received a Word of Power, was given a quest to complete Kyne's Sacred Trials by an old hunter in a hut, and slayed the bandits that had killed Kharjo. Then, they returned to Honeyside, where they found the Arch-Mage's new housecarl, Iona.

The next day, the two cleared out an old Nordic tomb, helping a greedy adventurer who met her just demise via a spike trap in the ceiling, with Elwynn receiving another Word of Power and the actual treasure. He then explored Forelhost, the last bastion of the Dragon Cult - an arduous task that left Elwynn drained. In the end, they got the Dragon Priest's mask, fought and defeated a dragon, received a Word of Power, and exposed an Imperial Captain as a fake. At the end of this exhausting day, the two adventurers headed back to Honeyside in Riften. The Arch-Mage then headed to Markarth, to complete a few quests he had in the area. He returned items to the innkeeper and the Jarl's steward, and retrieved another priest's mask from a ruin north of the city. He then returned to his house in the Rift.

Dragon Business Renewed[]

Once there, he delved into the Ratway, underneath the city, to find the Blade Esbern, beating Thalmor to him. Esbern revealed that Alduin himself had returned, the foretold World-Eater, and all hope was lost. However, when Elwynn revealed that he himself was Dragonborn, Esbern's hope was renewed, and was escorted to Riverwood by Elwynn to meet with Delphine. There, Esbern told of a wall, on which was carved Alduin's story, located in the Reach. They split up, with Elwynn doing a few things on the way. He defeated one of the Guardian Animals, and transferred his goodies from Honeyside to the College. While there, he advanced to the next level in the Conjuration school, learning how to summon two creatures at once.

Elwynn then set out for Sky Haven Temple, the site of Alduin's Wall. On the way, he retrieved a staff for Enthir, defeated the Guardian Mudcrab, defeated one dragon, found Alduin himself raising another, defeated that one, and then found another and defeated it! After this 'Day of the Dragons', there was still fighting to be had, as the two adventurers joined up with Delphine and Esbern, and as a group they fought their way through the Forsworn encampment of the Karthspire. The two Blades guided Elwynn through the numerous puzzles and tricks their order had set up long ago, culminating in a Blood Seal at the top. Then, Sky Haven Temple was unveiled in all its glory (although Elwynn, musing on his great deeds of the day, inadvertently opened the door for Esbern to enter first, somewhat to the Arch-Mage's chagrin).

Alduin's Wall was the centrepiece of the temple, and both Esbern and Elwynn marvelled at its contents. Esbern, after studying and analysing the scenes showed on the wall, theorised that the ancient Nords had defeated him using a shout in the dragon tongue, which seemed to pull him out of flight. Delphine reluctantly advised Elwynn to seek the aid of the Greybeards in exploring this matter, despite her own personal misgivings. Admiring the view from the outside of the temple, Elwynn set out once again, aiming to eventually end up at High Hrothgar, to speak with Arngeir.

First, though, the Arch-Mage returned to his College, where he sorted out a dispute between two teachers, received a request from one of them to find an artifact, and learnt a new spell from Tolfdir. Setting off to Dawnstar, he infiltrated a necromancer den, and retrieved a flute for a member of the Bards College in Solitude; upon reaching the town, he returned items to several of its inhabitants, and spent a night at the local inn. Exploring the Pale further, Elwynn delved into a ruin on an island off the coast, where a shady necromancer had commenced some perverted experiments on long-dead female draugr - having ended his life, the adventurers continued on, via a shipwreck and a standing stone (where he enjoyed a light read), some Dwarven ruins, which he passed by, and a high mountain pass, to a lighthouse overlooking the icebound bay.

Hoping to find some shelter from the freezing northern night, possibly in the form of a welcoming old man and a warm hearth, Elwynn instead found a grisly sight - blood all over the floor, bodies strewn about, and a chaurus carcass in the fireplace. Reading journals and letters, the Arch-Mage pieced together a tragic story of a family taking up their dream home, only for it to go so horribly wrong. Hastening into the cellars, and through a hole in the wall into a Falmer hideout, Elwynn found the dead bodies of the rest of the family, and avenged their deaths by killing their murderers. He then sold some wares in Dawnstar, and set out to find a cult dedicated to Boethiah.

After a bizarre meeting with an aspiring mage, a cannibal, and Elwynn's old acquaintance M'aiq the Liar, he met with some members of the cult, who told him of their despicable traditions and customs. Elwynn decided that this abominable sect could not be allowed to continue, and so commenced a massacre of the cult; however, this only served to attract the attention of Boethiah himself, who commanded him to slay a friend on her altar - Elwynn respectfully declined (after she had left, of course), and headed off to Solitude, where a surprisingly great reward for the return of the flute awaited him in the Bards College - some magical tips and tricks not usually studied by mages.

From the Heights to the Depths[]

Having disposed of Marcurio's services, Elwynn then proceeded, via Riften, Ivarstead, and several minor incidents, to High Hrothgar. There, he asked Arngeir about the shout he needed; the elder Greybeard rather heatedly disagreed at first, before another of his order convinced him to relent. He told Elwynn that he didn't know the shout, which he called Dragonrend, but gave him instructions on how to reach their reclusive leader, Paarthunax, who lived on the top of the Throat of the World, the highest mountain in Tamriel.

The Arch-Mage climbed up the treacherous path from High Hrothgar to the peak of the mountain, where a great surprise awaited him. Paarthunax was revealed to be a dragon, ancient and wise in the Way of the Voice. He greeted Elwynn as a comrade, one who also bore the blood of a dragon, and they conversed as equals. Paarthunax, after indulging a weakness for conversation and philosophy in himself, advised Elwynn to seek an Elder Scroll, so that he could cast himself back through time, and learn Dragonrend from those who created it. Before starting the descent, Elwynn had a rather temperamental conversation with Arngeir, in which the Arch-Mage bid farewell to the Greybeards, not wholly agreeing with their ideals and values.

He headed back to Winterhold to consult with Urag on the location of the Elder Scroll - along the way, he: carried out a task for Arniel Gane, a teacher at the College; enjoyed a one-on-one duel with a hostile ice witch; defeated a ghostly sabre-cat, and finally arrived back home. After returning Arniel's items, he consulted with Urag, who gave him a nonsensical book written by a man called Septimius Signus, apparently the foremost expert on Elder Scrolls, and one who had been missing for several years. Elwynn spent the night in his quarters, and headed out to where Signus had last been seen - north of Winterhold, in the ice fields.

In the center of a large iceberg, Elwynn found Signus, now almost completely mad. He was sane enough, however, to give Elwynn some nearly incomprehensible instructions, which were to delve into a Dwarven city and find the Scroll using some tricky methods. On the journey, the Arch-Mage entered a ruin, which was mostly inaccessible, and returned to the lighthouse to fulfil the last wish of one of its inhabitants - to be laid to rest in the fire at the top of the tower.

The lighthouse wasn't the best place to spend the night, with all the blood and guts strewn about, but Elwynn managed, although he had a rather strange dream involving Brelyna. He then set off for Alftand, the Dwarven city Signus had mentioned, which turned out to be absolutely massive. Descending ever deeper, and following the story of a doomed expedition into the ruin, several members of whom Elwynn encountered, in various states of life and death, he eventually reached a 'door', which he unlocked using Signus' items.

There, far underground the surface, Elwynn made the greatest discovery of his life - a great underground cavern, lit by glowing fungi and vast in its dimensions, which he later learned was called Blackreach. At first stupefied by the subterranean world which was revealed before him, he was suddenly accosted by some enemies, which jolted him back into some form of awareness. He set about exploring this new domain, continually assailed by new vistas and novel experiences. For instance, he stumbled upon a new form of nirnroot, one unusually red in appearance, and learned from a dead adventurer's diary that they were very valuable alchemically.

Already considering setting up an outpost of the College of Winterhold in this magical place, Elwynn had a sheltered sleep in a small building, and then explored this magical land. He found waterfalls, crimson nirnroot, Falmer, Chaurus and Dwarven constructs in large quantities, and wonders of all kinds. He rested in what seemed to have been a farmer's house, and had a strange dream where he shouted with Unrelenting Force on a yellow orb in Blackreach. The next morning, after some perilous jumps for nirnroot, he did so, and was astounded when a dragon was summoned out of thin air, it seemed!

The dragon was of course quickly defeated, and Elwynn continued his exploration, finding ruins and crimson nirnroot in sufficient quantities to please even the most dedicated alchemist. Having explored the outside wilds of Blackreach, Elwynn turned his attention to the various buildings and ruins scattered around the place: what appeared to be a barracks; a pumphouse; some blocked-up entrances to other Dwemer ruins; some lifts that served as outlets to Skyrim; the catacombs of the city; a grand debate hall; a viewing platform high above the orb; and finally, a lift to the Tower of Mzark, his destination.

In a large chamber, the Arch-Mage found a grand device, and mechanisms through which to retrieve and transcribe the Elder Scroll. After some ruminating on what do do, and a fair bit of trial and error, he managed to unlock the ancient contraption and the even older artifact within, in a grand spectacle he would remember till his dying days. He took the Elder Scroll out of the case it had been held in for millennia, carefully stowed it away, remembered to retrieve the transcription for Signus, and ascended back to Skyrim, still marvelling at the glories of Blackreach.

Time Travel and the World Eater[]

On the way back to Signus. Elwynn explored a fort full of unusually adept bandits, who used silver swords, and who had imprisoned some werewolves, the first the Arch-Mage had come across, one of whom was still alive. Elwynn marvelled at this beast, which he had previously thought to only exist in fairy tales, for some time, before killing the last remaining bandits, and set out once again to the ice fields and Signus, who happily received the lexicon, and asked Elwynn to get some blood from all the races of elves, to replicate that of the Dwemer. On the exit from the ice cavern, the Arch-Mage had a strange encounter with Hermaeus Mora, a Daedric Prince, who made a much more unsavoury request - to kill Signus (Elwynn refused, of course).

After completing a few errands, completing some training in the schools of Illusion and Restoration, fighting a very tough dragon in the College courtyard, and asking J'zargo if he wanted to assist the Arch-Mage in his travels, Elwynn set out to the Throat of the World, to use the Elder Scroll. To get there, he used a rather nifty teleportation spell he had recently devised, and exchanging banter with his new companion, they climbed to the top of the mountain, where Paarthunax pointed to the exact spot he should read the Scroll from.

This wondrous artifact sent Elwynn hurtling through time, showing him flashes of knowledge he had no hope of understanding. At last, it halted, and Elwynn saw a scene from millennia ago, where ancient Nord heroes battled to bring the dragon hegemony down. He saw the Tongues: Hakon, Gormlaith and Felldir fight and kill dragons of old; he saw them use the Dragonrend shout in battle, and felt the knowledge of the shout within him; he saw Felldir, fearing imminent defeat, use the Scroll to cast Alduin into the currents of Time. Then, all too soon, it was over, and Elwynn returned to his own time.

Elwynn-0

Elwynn, as seen in battle at the height of his skill

There, Alduin himself had arrived, and after speaking a few words, launched into combat with the Last Dragonborn. Elwynn however, aided by Paarthunax, a severely frightened J'zargo and all the magical expertise he could muster, withstood the World Eater's assault of fire and rock, and using Dragonrend, pulled Alduin from the sky, where his summoned allies were less effective, to the earth. Eventually, the Arch-Mage prevailed, but he was not able to prevent Alduin from flying off to recuperate, after hurling a few insults.

Asking Paarthunax how he might find out where his enemy went, Elwynn received the surprising answer of using the palace of Dragonsreach in Whiterun to trap one of Alduin's allies. He consulted with Arngeir as well, before making the long descent to Riften, collecting a dagger for Arniel on the way, and speaking with the apprentice of the alchemist lost in Blackreach. Having had enough of dragon business for the time being, Elwynn decided to explore a new region of Skyrim - the Falkreath Hold.

To the Gloomy Southern Forests[]

The mage arrived at Falkreath soaking wet in the middle of the night, and was immediately accosted by a guard asking about a lost dog. Somewhat irritated, Elwynn hurried to the local inn, where he took a room, and was told about some tasks that needed doing in the region. The next morning (somewhat pleased after a serving maid paid him a compliment or two), he encountered a pair of brothers, one very unfriendly, the other -the local shopkeeper - open and welcoming, who informed Elwynn of the local situation.

He then ran into an old warrior, who wanted the ashes of an old friend delivered to a priest, and the town blacksmith who, it turned out, was the one looking for the dog. Elwynn offered to look for it, before visiting a potioneer, and the local graveyard. There, he observed a small funeral, after which he returned the ashes to the priest, and spoke to the mourners. They revealed that their daughter, who wasn't even ten years old, had been torn apart by a local labourer, who was now rotting in jail.

He visited the Jarl's longhouse, more for appearances than anything else, and then exited the town. He found the dog quite quickly, as it turned out, but was astounded when it began speaking to him. The dog's name was Barbas, and he asked Elwynn to help settle a disagreement between him and his master. A few hints though, alerted the Arch-Mage that this 'master' was in all probability a Daedra of some power. Resigned to his fate, he followed Barbas up the mountain, past a bandit encampment and through the ruins of Helgen, to a cave high in the mountains, where several extremely difficult fights awaited the two mages.

Eventually, they reached a shrine to Clavicus Vile, who was revealed to be Barbas' master. He asked Elwynn to retrieve an axe for him, in exchange for a boon. They were caught unawares on the exit by a dragon, who the Arch-Mage brought down with Dragonrend. Elwynn realised that Barbas would be stuck with him for the near future, for the axe was on the other side of Skyrim, and so spent the night in Riverwood.

Returning to Falkreath, Elwynn spoke with Sinding, the labourer who had killed the girl. He revealed that he was a werewolf, and it was a cursed ring which had caused him to change form at the worst time, before giving the ring to the Arch-Mage and escaping in beast form. To help him, Elwynn killed a stag, and Hircine, Lord of the Hunt was revealed, who asked him to kill Sinding instead.

While heading to the place where Sinding was, he encountered a hunter sitting by the lake, fishing. This brought back a rush of memories for Elwynn, of his family, back home in High Rock, who he had not thought of in a long time. He realised that he had been so hellbent on the tasks and duties which he had in Skyrim - the College, the dragons, his adventures - that he had not stopped to think. His former actions of storming out of Wayrest in a huff seemed rather petty, and his present fame and fortune contrasted vividly with the semi-poverty he had grown up in. He decided that he would reach back out to those who had left - because, after all, what is more important than family?

Then, J'zargo got lost, which threw Elwynn into a bit of a concerned panic. However, the perilous terrain they had passed through did not allow any searching, and so he entered the beautiful grotto where Sinding was. The werewolf however asked Elwynn to refrain from killing him, and since the Arch-Mage had always had reservations about doing the deed, he accompanied Sinding in hunting the other hunters. Hircine was rather pleased with this result as well, somewhat to the mage's disappointment.

He then found J'zargo, lost on a high outcrop, helped a hunter recover the bodies of his friends, and rested at a hunter camp, before starting a circuit around Falkreath. First, he slew three irritating Thalmor, then a spiritual bear, then he fought his way through a bandit camp to recover a piece of Mehrunes' Razor, and slew a dragon to retrieve a Word of Power. On the way back, though, J'zargo and Barbas seemed to severely annoy each other, and started fighting; however, Elwynn managed to calm them down, and they spent a peaceful night at the inn.

The next morning, Elwynn commenced a proper exploration of the Hold. First, he found a sinister door emblazoned with a skull, underneath the road - when he tried to enter, it asked a question, and refused access; then, he found some ruins, and was about to explore them when a dragon intervened (the ruins turned out to be very small). After killing a necromancer, he explored a ruin and obtained a Word of Power, and returned to Falkreath, killing a few bandits on the way. A quick diversion northwards saw Clavicus' Axe obtained (as Elwynn had gotten rather tired of Barbas' antics); and when they returned to Clavicus, Elwynn accepted his boon in return, bidding farewell to the dog.

The next day saw many disturbances in the Whiterun Hold. First, there was a massive fight as Elwynn, trying to clear out a giant camp, was in turn attacked by a marauding dragon (and a sabre-cat got involved too)! Elwynn though, was happy to let the others wear each other out, and when the dragon was the last one standing, it was swiftly dispatched. Then, when he tried to subdue a magical anomaly, the commotion attracted some mammoths, mudcrabs, and even a giant, all of which fell to the combined magic of Elwynn and J'zargo. After subduing a ghostly mammoth, he returned to Whiterun, to propose his dragon-trapping idea to Jarl Balgruuf.

After the Jarl overcame his initial shock and disbelief, he told Elwynn he could only approve the scheme if there was no threat of an attack from either side waging the Civil War. He suggested calling for a truce at neutral ground - perhaps High Hrothgar? With thoughts and plans filling his mind, Elwynn spent a pleasant night at the Bannered Mare, before taking the carriage back to snowy Winterhold, where he witnessed Arniel's experiment go horribly wrong, and, horrified, quickly retired to his quarters.

Windhelm and Morthal, Holds Unexplored[]

Unable to ascertain how to reverse the disastrous calamity, he informed all the College members of what had happened, as an Arch-Mage should. He released J'zargo then, to continue his studies, but Brelyna persuaded the Arch-Mage that she should be at his side in these times of stress. Heading off to Whiterun, he took his first wander around the imposing city, learning that a serial killer was on the loose, and that a portion of the local Nord population was rather openly rude towards Dark Elves, which Elwynn took great offence to.

Entering the grand Palace of the Kings, Elwynn witnessed a debate between Ulfric Stormcloak himself, and his second-in-command. After speaking with the Jarl's steward, and being approved to assist in catching the serial killer, the Arch-Mage exchanged a few words with the Jarl, who recognised him from Helgen, and asked if he wanted to join the Stormcloak ranks - an offer which Elwynn, of course, declined.

The Arch-Mage spent a night at the Dark Elves' tavern (after starting his investigation into the murders), before learning from a journal, to his anger, that the perpetrator was an ex-mage of the College. This new discovery spurred Elwynn on, and he discovered a strange amulet, along with a hidden room in an abandoned house where the perpetrator had obviously committed some gruesomely heinous acts. On shaky evidence, the court mage, Wuunferth, was arrested for the murders, and there matters rested for the moment.

The next day, Elwynn explored Windhelm further, from the shops right down to the docks. He slew an assassin who had been hunting his old acquaintance Malborn, from the Thalmor Embassy, and helped out the East Empire Company with a problem they'd had been having. Two dragon attacks did not stop him from retrieving an artefact for an alchemist, and he finally made progress on his long-running quest for the Dark Brotherhood, which had attacked him on numerous occasions, by speaking to a boy who wanted to contact them.

Seeing no other option, Elwynn carried out the wishes of that boy, to kill his former headmistress, in cold blood. In typical Elwynn style, the execution of the attempt was horribly abject, and the mage exited with children dancing around a dead body. Still musing over his deed, the Arch-Mage went to sleep in his well-appointed home in Riften, and woke up, to his shock, in a shack! A Dark Brotherhood member, who had obviously drugged him, put forward a proposition: to kill a captive, in exchange for the the assassination of Grelod. Elwynn however turned on the assassin, and slew her where she sat, finding himself to be in the swamps of Morthal.

Elwynn had long wanted to explore this hold, the only major city in Skyrim he had not yet visited. He started by visiting the Jarl and the inn, and then set about doing some adventuring. Having retrieved the last shard of Mehrune's Razor, and slain a dragon on top of a mountain, he set about uncovering the story behind a burnt-down house, and in doing so uncovered a vampire scheme to infiltrate the town, and enslave its inhabitants. The Arch-Mage entered the lair of the vampire mastermind, and cut down all within, including Movarth Piquine, the leader himself.

After a restful night at the Moorside Inn, the two mages set out once again to explore the surrounding area. On the way to retrieve a book for the College librarian, Elwynn was outwitted by a warlock in a Nordic ruin, who trapped him in a cage; however, the Arch-Mage escaped and killed his captor, finding a Word of Power on the way out. Having retrieved the book from a well-fortified bandit camp, he reported the news of the assassin's death to the order called the Penitus Oculatus, who gave him the location of the headquarters of the Brotherhood in return.

Destruction, Dwemer, and the Dark Brotherhood[]

He then headed to Dawnstar, where he handed in a variety of items to the locals, and gained information from a greedy pirate captain. The owner of the museum on the Mythic Dawn, a man called Silus, requested Elwynn to accompany him to a shrine to Mehrunes Dagon; on the way, the mage retrieved an intriguing sword and a Word of Power from the depths of a ruin. At the shrine, high in the mountains of the Pale, tragedy struck: when Elwynn refused Dagon's command to kill Silus, the Daedric Prince summoned two allies, who slew the museum order and almost cut down Elwynn as well. Having angered this particular Daedra, Elwynn returned to his home at the College.

While there, he conversed with a few of the senior mages, and Faralda, the expert in the school of Destruction magic, gave him a cryptic riddle, which she said would train his mind for the most advanced Destruction spells. After some rumination, Elwynn decided it pointed to a ruin southwest of Dawnstar, where he headed, and after some time, he unravelled the next stage in the puzzle, and then explored a large and sprawling Dwemer ruin to find some Falmer blood for Septimus Signus.

Eventually, they reached Blackreach, where Brelyna was as awestruck as Elwynn had been, when he had first beheld that magical place, and ascending back to Skyrim, they rushed back to Signus. Using the blood, the mad wizard unlocked a tunnel that bored deep into the icy waters, and inside, they found a book, which seemed to vaporise Signus into a pile of ash. Hermaeus Mora, the Daedric Prince, appeared, and informed the Arch-Mage that the book was his tool; it gave Elywnn some magical knowledge.

In Windhelm, the mages set sail with the East Empire Company on a mission to kill some pirates. Sailing far into the Sea of Ghosts, a long way northeast of Winterhold, Elwynn infiltrated the tower and killed the master mage, whereupon the Company launched an assault which killed everyone else. The two mages then returned to the mainland, and took a carriage to Falkreath, where he was greeted by an entourage of guards.

In the morning, inflamed by righteous anger, he assaulted the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, killing everyone inside, in retribution for their numerous assaults on his person. He did the task alone, unaccompanied by Brelyna or any summoned ally, because this matter was a personal one, and he strongly felt that the assassins should feel the fear of those they killed. Emerging back into the cold Falkreath night, Elwynn travelled to meet with the Penitus Oculatus, who rewarded him, and said that the Emperor himself would be informed of the Arch-Mage's actions.

Ancient Prophecy Fulfilled[]

At a ruin west of the Throat of the World, Elwynn found the next location for Faralda's riddle, and, after learning the location of a Guardian Troll, he headed up to High Hrothgar, to see what could be done about a possible peace conference. Arngeir took some convincing, but he eventually agreed that High Hrothgar would be the best place to hold such talks; Elwynn was thus sent out to Ulfric Stormcloak and General Tullius, leaders of the Stormcloak and Imperial factions respectively, to invite them to the Greybeard's sanctuary.

On the way to Windhelm, he fought a dragon and a dragon priest at the same time on top of a mountain, and learned three Words of Power, mastering a whole shout in one, to boot. Ulfric was soon won over to the plan, and Elwynn was soon on his way to Solitude and General Tullius. On the way though, he stopped first near Whiterun, where he killed the Guardian Troll, and then at Markarth, where he fought both Forsworn and bandits, fell into a river, and found the last location of Faralda's riddle.

General Tullius was much more skeptical of Elwynn's proposition than Ulfric had been. It took all Elwynn's diplomatic skill to convince him that attending would be a good idea, and once this was done, he set off back to High Hrothgar, where the participants were gathering. After speaking with a downcast Arngeir, and witnessing the Blades demand entrance, Elwynn took his seat at the head of the council table, and gave the signal to start the negotiations.

As expected, the talks were rowdy and confrontational, with barbs and taunts being thrown from both sides. The first act was to expel the Thalmor Ambassador, Elenwen, whom the Imperials had brought, and whom both the Stormcloaks and the Dragonborn strongly disliked. After some debating, Markarth was handed over to Ulfric's side, in return for Riften, and a motion to compensate the Empire for an alleged massacre said to have occurred at Karthwasten was defeated. Furthermore, Elwynn forbid the legion from taking the Pale.

With the meeting over, Esbern told the Arch-Mage of a way to summon a dragon to Dragonsreach - to speak its name as a shout. Delphine also cornered Elwynn, to ask him to kill Paarthurnax, because of his crimes millennia ago - a request which left the Dragonborn rather confused, and he elected to ignore it for the moment. Before calling the dragon, he returned to Winterhold, where he undertook some study of the Restoration school, in case he needed it on his quest to Alduin. Annoyingly, this study took place in the Midden underneath the College, with the Augur of Dunlain, but it was soon over.

The Dragonborn spent a comfortable night in his old home in Whiterun, before heading up to Dragonsreach, to trap the dragon. In a great open hall overlooking the open tundra, Elwynn unleashed his Thu'um, and called the dragon, who was called Odahviing, to battle. The Dragonborn eventually managed to lure Odahviing into the trap, and compelled the dragon to release the location of Alduin. The great beast complied, telling the the Arch-Mage that his enemy had fled to a ruin called Skuldafn; however, it was unreachable by foot, and only accessible from the air.

While Farengar unsuccessfully tri to perform some experiments on Odahviing, Elwynn mused on whether he could trust the dragon's word, and furthermore, whether he was trustworthy enough to be the Dragonborn's mode of transport. In the end though, it was not really a choice. The Arch-Mage mounted the dragon, and with a great flap of wings, they were flying. The flight, over too soon to appreciate the views, took Elwynn to a ruin on a peak of the Velothi Mountains, high above the Rift.

Elwynn -3

Dragonborn and Dragon-rider

Several tough fights awaited him, against both dragons and draugr, sometimes both at the same time. Elwynn fought through however, and acquitted himself extremely well in battle, using all the skill he had. Unlocking a dragon claw door, and having found a Word of Power, he found, at the very top of the ruin a Dragon Priest. This particular one was guarding a portal, and having defeated it, with one last glance at the swirling storm, Elwynn jumped into it.

He found himself in Sovngarde, the home of the Nordic dead. It wasn't much of a surprise, but the place was still spectacular. Elwynn struggled through the foul mist of the World Eater, narrowly avoiding him on several occasions, and passing the test of strength set to him by the divine Tsun, he reached the Hall of Valor. There, he met with several people, including Ysgramor, but most importantly the Nord heroes of old: Gormlaith, Hakon, and Felldir.

Together these four re-entered the vale of Sovngarde and called Alduin to battle with their collective Thu'um. Three times they dispelled the mists, and finally the World Eater descended upon them. The fight was brutal in its intensity and length, and several times the Dragonborn came within a whisker of dying, but finally the Dragonrend shout pulled him to the ground, and the great dragon succumbed to his wounds. Elwynn had done it.

Before returning, he spoke with the Nordic Tongues, who were now his comrades-in-arms, and bid them farewell. At Elwynn's nod, Tsun returned him to Skyrim.

This is the end of the first part of the tale of the Last Dragonborn.

Little is known the Dragonborn's life during the six months between the first and second parts, other than the fact he found the last Dragon Priest mask for his museum collection during this time.

Solstheim[]

With all the masks collected, Elwynn thought his adventuring days were done. But it was not to be. Six months after the defeat of Alduin, a group of cultists attacked him in Whiterun, proclaiming their allegiance to one whom they called Miraak, the 'True Dragonborn'. Reading a note on their bodies, he knew his next destination would be Windhelm. There, he boarded a ship, the 'Northern Maiden', to take him to Raven Rock, whence the Cultists had come, on the island of Solstheim. He would find this 'Miraak', and show him that Elwynn, Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold, the Last Dragonborn of song and legend, was not to be trifled with.

A New Adventure[]

As soon as the prow of the Northern Maiden touched the beach, Elwynn was accosted by an official, who wanted to know what the mage would be doing in this province of Morrowind. The mage, thinking it prudent to withhold his real intentions, merely replied he was looking for work. After a short exchange, during which he learnt a few facts about Raven Rock, he was let go to wander into the town. Investigating an odd shining pillar called the Earth Stone near the town, he was incessantly badgered by an odd man in fine robes. Elwynn got so exasperated he blurted out he was looking for someone named Miraak - the man, after considering the matter for a moment, revealed that Miraak had been dead for thousands of years, yet he had an old temple in the center of the island.

Wandering around the town, Elwynn found that nearly everyone had a strange response to Miraak - everyone couldn't quite remember how they had heard the name. He met a fascinating looking fellow in the inn, was asked by Crescius Caerellius in the mine to investigate what had happened to his great grandfather, and then underwent a most strange experience. While investigating the pillar, his mind were overthrown by someone else, and he found himself hammering into the pillar! When this happened a second time, a greatly disturbed Elwynn fled from the pillar, back into the relative safety of Raven Rock, where he settled down to a good night's rest, after trying some of the ghastly sujamma on offer.

Miraak[]

However, he was not to get a good night's rest. In fact, when he woke up, he was not in his bed, but in the temple he had been told about, hammering away. Shaken to his very soul now, he met with a woman with Frea, who was trying to arouse some of the other labourers there from their delirium. She revealed herself as belonging to the ancient tribe of the Skaal, and that she was trying to save her people. Assisted capably by Frea, Elwynn delved deep into the large dungeon beneath the Temple of Miraak, fighting cultists and draugr, and learning a Word of Power for the Dragon Aspect shout. At the end, he found a Black Book, tainted by dark magic, which brought him to another world.

There, he beheld Miraak himself, surrounded by tentacley minions and a dragon. He, after speaking to Elwynn, announced his intention to return to dominate Solstheim, and Elwynn back. By now, Elwynn was almost traumatised by the bad day's events, cursing Solstheim, its unfriendly inhabitants, its desolate landscapes, and so on. However, after speaking to Storn Crag-Strider, Frea's father, at the Skaal village, who revealed some facts about Miraak and his history, along with the fact that he and his companions had meditated in the driving snow and wind to protect his village, Elwynn felt slightly ashamed of his earlier rantings.

He thus travelled to Saering's Watch, the location Storn had suggested, to learn a Word of Power. There, he duelled an Ancient Dragon, while fighting hordes of draugr. However, when the dragon was finally defeated, Miraak suddenly appeared and took its soul for himself, to Elwynn's rage. The mage then learned the Word of Power, which was for the Bend Will shout. On the way back, he stopped at the Wind Stone, and freed the people working there with the shout, but in doing so unleashed a monstrous being, called a Lurker, which Elwynn and his summons quickly defeated. Speaking to Storn once more, the shaman recommended talking to the Dark Elf wizard, Neloth, the same one whom Elwynn had met on his first day at the Earth Stone.

Explorations Around Raven Rock[]

However, Elwynn decided to return to Raven Rock, for a long-awaited rest. Waking up in the morning, he was greatly relieved to find he was still in the Retching Netch. He freed the people working at the Earth Stone, fighting another Lurker in doing so, and then headed down into the mine, to investigate the mystery of Crescius Caerellius' grandfather. The mine eventually evolved into a Nordic tomb, and so Elwynn had to fight yet more draugr in the catacombs. They found the body and journal of Caerellius' ancestor, and Elwynn had to swing the Bloodskal Barrow's eponymous blade to progress further into the tomb. At then end, he found, to his great surprise, another Dragon Priest, whom he defeated, and to his horror, a Black Book.

Elwynn eventually summoned the courage to read the artefact, and, after he was transported back to that odd world, was greeted by the Daedric Prince Hermaeus Mora, who revealed that it was his realm of Apocrypha. A very afraid Elwynn ventured through the Black Book, fighting seekers and Lurkers on the way, and eventually learned its secret. After emerging from Apocrypha, the two mages cleared out a reaver (Solstheim bandit) hideout, and made their way southwards, back to Raven Rock.

The next morning, Elwynn returned his ancestor's journal to Crescius, and then a most curious thing happened: Brelyna was imprisoned in the town jail, for some unspecified incident!, Mightily confused and irritated, Elwynn let her out, and thereafter kept a very close eye on his companion. He then helped the temple with their problem of ash spawn in their tombs, and finally returned to the Netch for some wine and clam chowder, and a good night's rest.

Heading out of the town, Elwynn almost immediately ran into a battle between the Captain of the Raven Rock Guards and some ash spawn - after the beasts were defeated, the Captain revealed that he wanted to find out what was the source of this 'invasion'. A note directed Elwynn to a fort nearby called Fort Frostmouth. but first Elwynn retrieved a folio for the wife of the Second Councilor, and then investigated a house where an intriguing tragedy of two lovers seemed to occur. Having arrived at the fort, Elwynn fought his way through to the reanimated Falx Carius, finding some interesting clues as to who reanimated him on the way, most pointing to one 'Ildari'.

Returning to Captain Veleth, Elwynn received a hefty sum of gold for his troubles, and was immediately asked to speak to the Second Councilor on an urgent matter. Assuming that the Councilor wouldn't appreciate being woken in the middle of the night, he spent a night at the inn, starting a new book series, and the next morning, made his way to Morvayn Manor. There, the Arch-Mage returned the folio, and was informed of a plot to assassinate the First Councillor. Putting this to the back of his mind for the moment, Elwynn set out once again, to try and make it to the Sun Stone.

Neloth[]

The next morning, Elwynn traversed the width of the island. He tried out his new Conjure Seeker spell, and was repulsed by his new summon; he fought some spriggans; he freed the workers at the Sun Stone, and finally arrived at the giant mushrooms on the south-eastern peninsula. He learnt that they were the home of Neloth, who turned out to be a renowned Telvanni wizard, to Elwynn's delight. However, hearing of Neloth's general unpleasantness from the denizens of Tel Mithryn, which was the name of the mushroom city, dampened his enthusiasm slightly.

Neloth turned out to be a unique specimen, and so Elwynn almost immediately began a game of one-upmanship with him. However, the Telvanni seemed to win the first couple of bouts, as when he ordered the Arch-Mage to follow him to retrieve a Black Book, there was no option but to hurry after him. Then, after a distraught Elwynn told Neloth that his steward had been killed by ash spawn, the news was received with supreme unconcern, and the Dragonborn was commanded, like an errand-boy, to find him a new steward! Finally, he revealed that he and only he had the means to unlock the Dwarven ruin they were visiting, demonstrating his superior local knowledge. However, Elwynn was able to get some of his own back inside, demonstrating his well-honed conjuration and powerful destruction spells in combat with the automated denizens.

Neloth, however, would have none of this disobedience, and so he ordered Elwynn to do all the dirty, menial tasks, including what seemed like endless swimming in water. The Arch-Mage had to take his revenge pettily, delaying all his actions, being generally lazy, etc. At last, the steam supply was restored, and Elwynn was able to delve once more into the strange world of Apocrypha. This particular book had many chapters, so the mage faced an even harder challenge than usual. At the end, he spoke with Hermaeus Mora, who demanded a price in return for the power to overthrow Miraak: the secrets of the Skaal, to Elwynn's dismay.

Exiting the Dwarven ruin, they faced another dragon, whose soul Miraak stole, as usual. Smarting over this insult, he returned to Raven Rock, and spoke to the inkeeper, who told him two very interesting things: firstly, that small gifts were being laid at the tomb of the Ulen House, which was hostile to the First Councillor, and that staking out the tomb might bring interesting results, and secondly, that the ash yams Elwynn had been gorging himself on were grown in the ashes of Dunmer dead. Feeling more than a bit queasy, he retired for the night. Returning to Tel Mithryn early the next morning, Elwynn snuck into a secret room and obtained access to the Black Book Neloth had been studying. This one was also multi-chaptered, so when the Arch-Mage finally emerged, he was exhausted and irritated by its numerous pitfalls, including chapters that led back on one another, but had been granted new powers.

Elwynn -2

The Arch-Mage casting a spell in Kolbjorn Barrow

Tales of Intrigue and Treasure[]

Having carefully awarded his fellow master wizard, Elwynn patrolled the Ulen tomb, and managed to catch a seemingly harmless Dunmer matron, who claimed she was following the custom of leaving presents for the dead. Suspicious, he returned to the second Councillor, who sent him to infiltrate their house, somewhat to Elwynn's annoyance. The matron and her daughter, however, attacked him as soon as he entered their home; although the surprise ambush was initially effective, the Dragonborn's skill soon came to the fore, and he dispatched his opponents quickly.

The two women were no doubt afraid that Elwynn was on their tail, and he did find evidence to support their guilt inside, as if their attacking him wasn't evidence enough. Almost exhausted by this point, he set out to meet the traitors in battle at a place called Ashfallow Citadel; he slew numerous assassins of the Morag Tong sect, and Vendil Severin, the chief architect of the treason, himself. Having ended the threat to Raven Rock, Elwynn was rewarded most richly, with a gift of gold and that of the vacated Severin Manor, giving the Arch-Mage a large house to call home away from home. A thoroughly gratified Elwynn returned to the expansive Manor, although he was slightly irritated to find that the corpses hadn't been cleared away, and after exploring his new accommodation, he and Brelyna took a very well-deserved rest: two days of recuperation and carrying out minor errands.

When they felt well enough for adventuring, the two mages set out again into the wilds of Solstheim. Dispatching some cultists, they met a man named Ralis, who was excavating a ruin named Kolbjorn Barrow; Elwynn generously agreed to being his patron for the work, which was aimed at excavating the relics of a famed Nordic enchanter named Ahzidal. They headed out again, and after numerous minor adventures, they arrived at the Beast Stone, which they freed from Miraak's corruption, and then carried on to the Skaal village. Storn was naturally cautious at the prospect of handing the Skaal's secrets over to their great enemy, and asked for time to meditate while Elwynn cleansed the remaining Stone. The Arch-Mage acquiesced to his request, and returned to Raven Rock, and his new house, to read a book on Ahzidal, which outlined his life and possible tomb underneath Kolbjorn.

The next morning, having enchanted some new jewellery and clothing on his personal enchanting table, he headed out again to the Water Stone, which he cleansed, passing numerous intriguing ruins along the way. He then encountered a pirate camp, found an intriguing treasure map, and fought some little creatures called Rieklings which made cute sounds and were unexpectedly ferocious. After finding Brelyna, who had gotten lost, he investigated the treasure map, and found one of the set of Deathbrand Armour.

He was very quickly distracted from this, however, because of some horrifying events that soon took place. At the Skaal village, Storn had accepted that he would give up the secrets of the Skaal, to Frea's dismay, but out of the blue, Hermaeus Mora impaled him with a tentacle, killing him quickly, and taking his secrets, as Elwynn looked on in horror. The Daedric Prince then fulfilled his end of the bargain, giving Elwynn the full knowledge of the Bend Will Dragon Shout. Reeling from shock at Storn's death, the treachery of the Daedra, and Frea's command to avenge her father's sacrifice, he consoled himself by researching the treasure of the legendary pirate Haknir Death-Brand.

Greatly perturbed by the events of the day, the Arch-Mage temporarily returned to the comforting surroundings of Winterhold, where he engaged in some calming enchanting and reading. Returning to the ash-covered island, he received a message from Ralis about Kolbjorn Barrow, because some Draugr had awakened and killed the miners. Giving Ralis some money to continue the dig, he killed the draugr below, and found, much to his delight, a pair of boots engraved with a magnificent enchantment: the ability to walk on water! Obviously, such clothing was what Elwynn's dreams were made of, and for the rest of the day, he might have been floating.

Over the Mountains of Solstheim[]

The Arch-Mage then met with Neloth at Tel Mithryn. After he had been informed of several recent developments in a variety of areas, Neloth confided that he believed someone was indirectly attacking him, and gave his reluctant ally a ring that would trace the culprit. Elwynn tracked the signal to a small graveyard on the coast, and in particular, to the grave of one Ildari Sarothril, whom he recognised as being involved at Fort Frostmouth. Neloth, to Elwynn's disgust, revealed that she was a former apprentice on whom he experimented, and cast a divination to reveal her location (although somewhat horrified by Neloth's human testing, Elwynn was reluctantly impressed by the intricacy and power of Neloth's magic).

Somewhat disgruntled by the presumptuousness of the Telvanni wizard, Elwynn headed out to Highpoint Tower to reduce the semi-undead Ildari to ashes. He was hesitant to kill someone who could be described as a victim, but after finding out that she had turned on the miners who had taken her in, murdering most of them and imprisoning the others, his resolve strengthened. In the depths of the dungeon, he personally fought the witch and slew her, ripping her heart out in a fit of vicious rage. He was pleasantly surprised at Master Neloth's reward for him - the Arch-Mage was inducted into House Telvanni, as a sign of his worth as an ally. Having received information about a Black Book, Elwynn and Brelyna headed back home to Raven Rock.

The next morning, they set out to find it. Entering a vast cavern called Benkongerike, which was filled with lustful and acrobatic Rieklings, they fought their way through to the Black Book, which was happily shorter than usual. On the way back, Elwynn decided to help a tribe reclaim their hall from some Rieklings, a task which was accomplished swiftly. At Tel Mithryn, the Arch-Mage consented, very reluctantly, to be the subject of one of Neloth's experiments, which surprisingly went very well, although the Dunmer did warn about potential side effects.

Soon after, he made a grevious error: having just found a chest of Deathbrand treasure, he was musing over lockpicking it when they espied Revus Sarvani, a local trader, defending himself from an ash spawn. Absent-mindedly, Elwynn cast a spell at the creature, but due to his lack of focus, the spell went wide and took Revus out instead. In great consternation at this accidental death, the Arch-Mage reasoned that Neloth had probably had similar accidents, or perhaps done even worse on purpose, and so continued on, the excitement of treasure hunting being replaced with a hollow dullness.

Having retrieved one piece of Deathbrand Armor in empty silence, Elwynn travelled up to Raven Rock to retrieve another, which he found next to a fallen tree. Still musing sadly on Revus' death, bandits and trolls were dispatched with grim effiency, and the last piece of armour was retrieved along the northwest coast of the island, along with a key to Haknir Death-Brand's tomb. Leaving this intriguing development for another day, the adventurers returned to Raven Rock, where Elwynn commenced a new serious of books, titled The Poison Song, which told an fascinating tale of intrigue and death in Morrowind.

At daybreak the following day, they returned to Ralis, who informed them that draugr had arisen once again, and so Elwynn headed down into the ruin. Much more of the dust was cleared away this time, and so the Arch-Mage could venture much further inside, killing many draugr and finding another of Ahzidal's relics. Heading north, Elwynn was an uncomfortable witness to the rejection of a clan chief by its spiritual founder; he however promised to keep it a secret, and traversed the mountains to Haknir's tomb. There, he found mounds of treasure and gold, and having dreams of establishing a museum at the College with the riches, and possibly even repairing the bridges, both physical and metaphorical, between the College and town of Winterhold, he defeated Haknir's ghost and the shades of his crew in combat, to claim the treasure as his own. Travelling quickly back to Raven Rock, they finished another volume of The Poison Song, and retired for the night.

They headed out at sunrise for a day of pure exploration. Their first stop was a mine inhabited by bandits, whom they slew, with Elwynn discovering a new liking for the shock magic of the Destruction school. Next stop was White Ridge Barrow, which held an unpleasant surprise: magical spiders of many differing varieties, which jumped, scuttled, and exploded out of slimy pods. After killing their creator and imbuing a few scrolls with the magic for himself (after a few false starts), exploration was resumed. Deep underground, to his mingled dismay and delight, the Arch-Mage found a word of power, a Dragon Priest, and a Black Book. He reluctantly entered and traversed the latter, despite its malevolent energy trying to hurt him, and received a boon and the end.

Their choice of sleeping location - at a campfire at the entrance to the barrow - left them in a good spot to quickly resume exploring the next day. They first came across a camp of Rieklings, whose cute noises were rather grating to Elwynn's ears by this point, and a curious small Dwemer ruin they had between their tents, which was thoroughly investigated. They then delved into another, much larger, work of the Dwarves, which had numerous puzzles and some rather crafty denizens. He was rather disappointed, to say the least, when it was revealed at the end that the treasure the ruin had been guarding was a dwarven helmet!

Elwynn, fairly let down, stumbled across a hide for werebears on his way back to Raven Rock, where another round of the favoured book series, and a day of rest, left them in good stead for further adventuring. In particular, Kolbjorn Barrow, where another round of miners had been killed, and another round of draugr risen. The Arch-Mage, pretty tired of Ralis' shady air by this point, reluctantly descended once again into the barrow, which was much more open than previously, and in a maze of hidden pathways, secret doors, and many, many traps, he found not one, but two, of Ahzidal's Relics. Elwynn was very reluctant to give Ralis the five thousand septims he requested this time, but he paid up, although he did warn Ralis as to what would happen if he was double-crossed, and instructed him to excavate a word wall, whose chanting Elwynn could hear.

Musing on whether he had been too harsh on the man, they travelled up to the mountains, where they found bandits, spriggans, and hagravens, and soaked taproots in a magical spring. Getting a bit wet in the water, Elwynn had a strange sensation of Neloth's spell twisting for the worse, and since he needed to return the taproots to a shopkeeper at Tel Mithryn anyway, he decided to head there for the night. Neloth removed his spell, and Elwynn fixed the diseased wall of his house, so for once, Arch-Mage and Master Wizard were in full agreement.

Dragonborn[]

On the way back from Tel Mithryn, Elwynn tried out his new 'Bend Will' shout on a dragon, and discovered, to his amazement, that it too was bent to his will, and he spent a very enjoyable few hours swooping over the island on its back, although he wasn't able to persuade Brelyna to accompany him. Armed with this new power, he began mentally preparing himself for the task of facing Miraak, and read a chapter of the Poison Song while unsuccessfully staking out a secretive trader's hideout.

He resolved to visit some caves along the western shore to test his mettle in combat, and unexpectedly received several tough tests. First, there were the Rieklings mounted on their ferocious bristleback boars, who were all too happy to gore with abandon, and the Arch-Mage and his companions managed to subdue them with difficulty. Next, there was Karstaag, a monstrous ice spirit who Elwynn accidentally summoned, and who was one of the toughest enemies the Dragonborn had ever faced; eventually, he too was beaten into the icy ground by the sheer power of Elwynn's magic.

They spent a night at Severin Manor, reading the Poison Song, and then headed out to Ralis at Kolbjorn Barrow, who had summoned Elwynn again. To his horror, the excavation site was a mess of blood and dead bodies, and Ralis was nowhere to be seen. A look at his journals told the frightening truth - Elwynn's partner had been possessed by Ahzidal, who had commanded him to slay the miners and awaken him down in the tomb. To stop this, they hurried down into the barrow, finding a word wall and two more of Ahzidal's relics. At the bottom, they found Ahzidal, an immensely powerful dragon priest, who Elwynn engaged in combat and slew after a lengthy duel.

Ralis was spared, however, because Elwynn judged that he had indeed been mind-controlled, and not actively sought the death of the miners. They then found another Black Book, the last Elwynn would find, and he gained its powers. Back in the safety of his chambers at Severin Manor, he opened the last of the Black Books, and set out to face Miraak. The Book was the longest and most challenging yet, filled with seekers, lurkers, and all sorts of monsters, in addition to terrifying puzzles.

In a courtyard among tall pillars, the Last Dragonborn learnt the final word of the Dragon Aspect shout, and then flew one of Miraak's dragons up to the top of his tower, having bent it to his will. He confronted the First Dragonborn there, and after a brief interlude, they engaged one another in combat. Miraak was a devious opponent, with many tricks of his own, but Elwynn beat him into submission, slowly and steadily, using all the tricks he had learned over his years of adventuring. As he stood over his defeated opponent, Hermaeus Mora appeared, and killed his servant; and thus, the First Dragonborn was defeated by the Last at the summit of Apocrypha. Elwynn had fulfilled the destiny that fate laid out for him.

Thus ends the second part of the tale of the Last Dragonborn.

Not much is now known about the rest of the Arch-Mage's career. He appears sporadically in tales and poems dating back to the Fourth Era. His appearances in the earliest of these depict him as a fearsome warrior, while the later songs increasingly portray him as a wise arbiter and judge. The biography outlined below is mostly based on the Life of the Last Dragonborn, written by his son Edwyn, of which only fragments now survive for us, the original having been lost to time.

Later life[]

Traits and Personality[]

Elwynn is a very cautious and observant character. He is very careful around water due to the fact that he hates getting his robes wet and dirty. For this reason, he was overjoyed to find a set of boots on Solstheim that allowed him to walk on water. Elwynn is very keen on royalties such as nice warm beds, exotic foods and wines (spiced wine especially) and expensive, intriguing books (the latter to the point of collecting them even if he already has them), but doesn't mind sleeping in slightly lower class beds and eating basic provisions as long as he has those 'pleasures'. He was also quite cowardly, often running away from his enemies and yelling at his companions to kill them, but as he progressed in arcane skill, he began to stand his ground and fight for himself more often.

Elwynn is not one for manual labour, but is much more keen on intellectual endeavors, such as perusing his wish to improve his magical ability in order to attend the College of Winterhold - as well as learning many interesting things through his love of reading. Elwynn also has a keen dislike for melee and ranged weapons, believing that they are crude, therefore completely ignoring them in a fight, even if his magicka reserves are running low he will not use any weapons at all. The only times he has ever swung a weapon was to open a puzzle door on the island of Solstheim, in the Bloodskal Barrow, and in the Eldergleam Sanctuary, to clear the way and to cut the tree. He has also occasionally dabbled in bound weapons, which he felt obliged to do as part of his Conjuration training - of these, he liked the conjured bow the most, and used it occasionally afterwards. He has also gained great skill in lockpicking, as a result of being compelled to unlock chests and containers all over Skyrim.

Elwynn is also somewhat clumsy. While nowhere near a complete klutz, he is known to stumble off nearby ledges, wander into fire pits, pick up objects that aren't his, and accidentally injure his own companions in battle. The occasions are rare when he spots a trap before it activates. He also tends to be easily swayed by the last opinion heard; a long-standing belief like "all daedra are evil" might be undone by a quick read, a distaste for Markarth may be quickly overpowered on hearing about the city's Dwemer history, and conflicting information may cause him to flip sides in a conflict. Elwynn is also very young, and some of his clumsiness can be contributed to his naivety. This does not mean he is stupid, but rather unsure of what the world holds and sometimes is caught off guard.

Despite not caring much for physical labour and combat, he is willing to put up with certain activities if they ultimately benefit his interests. His basic magical practice, for example, used to be summoning his familiar Wolfie and blasting it with enough Destruction magic until it attacks him, enduring the ghostly wolf's onslaught until near-death, upon which he finishes Wolfie off, heals himself, and repeats the process. Additionally, upon learning the Transmute spell, he concluded that strenuous mining might be worth it if it could earn him a tidy profit. Elwynn used to be fairly callous about his treatment of followers, treating Lydia as little more than a pack mule and totally ignoring her interests. He gradually warmed up to her, however, and after her death in Fellglow Keep, he deeply regretted the way he had behaved. Because of this, he swore to never behave that way to anybody else who would travel with him.

In terms of combat and arcane skill, Elwynn has achieved a legendary proficiency in all the recognised forms of magic, with his special talent coming in the fields of Conjuration, Destruction and Enchanting. Able to summon two enchanted companions at once, a feat which immediately places him among the elite ranks of mages, his favoured pairing of the two Dremora Lords named Fluffy and Snuffles marks him out as a true master of conjuration. His ability to harness large amounts of magicka in the most explosive Destruction spells demonstrates his mental strength and concentration, while his mastery at the enchanting table has allowed him to craft some of the most powerful equipment in Skyrim. His expertise in the schools of Alteration, Restoration, and Illusion, while not celebrated as highly, is still greater than most mages will ever reach. Combined with the mythical powers of the Dragonborn, which allow him to intuitively 'shout' spells of great power and varied effect, this expertise makes the unassuming mage one of the most fearsome opponents in Tamriel.
